Aussie Slater Formula 120 Jota

Paul
There's a very good chance that the motor was put together by Steve Winterton when he was working for Salters.Ill be seeing soon I'll jog his memory.

Roger
The Forumla 120 was built around the std 120 of which the factory only made approx 400,so the Formula 120 is even more special.
The Formula 1200 was of course built from a 1200

In terms of numbers I'd say 5/6 Forumla 120 were built all in red (i think). One was crashed by a journalist
on the last right bend before you get to Slaters.Maybe I should convert my 120,got me thinking now.

That's my old bike, leaning against a tree as I'd hurt my back and couldn't manage the centre stand...

I wanted to bring this thread back from the dead, as the number given for how many Formula 120s were built is wrong, its not 6 but 7, as I had the 7th. I bought it from Slaters back in the early 90's when it was looking sorry for itself, having just been bought back from Spain, where the original owner lived. Richard told me an interesting tale about how this last Formula came about..

They managed to sell 6 Formulas before the 120 Jotas were discontinued in favour of the then new RGS series, so that was that, or so they thought. A few months later, one morning they were opening up the shop, only to find a pair of feet sticking out of a cardboard box around the back of the workshop. It wasn't a tramp, but a young man who'd travelled all the way from Spain, with the intention to buy a Formula Jota. Very sorry he was told, but they've all gone, cant make anymore, how about an RGS instead?

But the young man wasn't to be deterred, as he waved a large bundle of notes at Richard... okay.. lets see what we can do. They tracked down the last Jota 120 (a demo model) at another dealer, so the young man and a mechanic were sent off in the works van to go and have a look at it. They returned with the almost new 120 in the van. It took three weeks to convert the Jota, during which the young man stayed with Richard and his family. When the bike was completed, he rode it home to Spain, from where every now and again he'd order the odd spare, so Richard knew he still had it.

Fast forward 20 years and the now not so young man, decided to sell, and offered to Slaters, who brought it home. Where I come in and bought it. Stripped it down, had the engine taken out to 1200cc, line bored the carbs etc.. couldn't get hold of a new Harris exhaust system, so made a one-off in stainless instead. It was 98% complete, when I sold it to a nice man who lives in the borders (Berwick I think), who already a couple of Formula Mirages.. I sold it because I thought I'd be soon be moving abroad, along with my mint SS900 Bevel...  in the end I didn't.. sigh..  :(

I've posted up some pics of the bike before it went to a new home, I've got some old pics some where of the bike when I first bought it..
BTW another oddity was that it was given a 'C' reg by the DVLC, when it would've originally have been a 'Y', not sure why, something to do with when it was exported out of the UK I think..

G'day, all sorry I've not been active on here at all for the last few years.
Still got the 'ole girl, still gets started and occasionally ridden.

Will have to get to a show in the warmer months!!

Cheers,
Lee. :)

There is one here in kalgoorlie, my mate has it in his shed.
It has a briken frame, near the neck. pretty common fault apparently.
Appears to be unmodified, but needs stripping down and the frame sending to a specialist repairer..

It came to him from a collection passed to him from an uncle in NZ, apparently his uncle purchased it from felicity kendall's husband some time ago.

As far as I know Slater never built a Breganzie Formula 120 - Yes a Hi-Po Jota but not labeled "Formula" from a  Breganzie.

A 1000cc FSC Zane perhaps - A bike that never existed.

Let see some PIC's.

Look back through the thread Ron and you'll see that they did indeed build them

Zane 1000 sfc no, Aprilia built 1000 sfc yes it does exist, 2 of them I believe

Ron, once more you're talking bollocks.
Slater made a few Breganze Formula 120 Jotas.
I even saw a row of them lined up outside Slater's shop brand new back in the day.
Just as the Formula Mirage was a way to shift stock 1200s (after adding bling) the Formula 120 was a way to shift the one-year-model 120 Jota after the RGS came out.
Which is a shame, as of all the 180s, RGSs and the one 120 Jota I have owned I think the 120 Jota is in the top 2 of my all time favourite standard Laverdas.

Hoe, I've 'chipped' your avatar off a few times for trying to kiss a married man.
But I've got a 'handle' on it now, Hoe.
As we're cleaning up the forum I won't mention 'head', Hoe.

Welcome to the nuthouse.

Ron, once more you're talking bollocks.
Grant: There's one thing you should know about me - I admit to ignorance as a learning process but I can't bollocks with a straight face like you can ;o)

Still would like to see a PIC of that Breganzie Slater Jota an if "Formula" is written on it.
