Back on the spanners

After a 12 month holiday from being a mechanic, I am going back on the spanners, working from home. First job is to get my bikes back up to scratch!

If anyone needs servicing or repairs in Sydney, drop me a line.

A little bit scary going to be self employed, after 40 odd years of somebody else paying me to play with spanners, but, if you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space....
 
I’ve built a workshop and have just got back into it- word of mouth, nothing tearing. I’m only doing it as a glorified hobby but I’m really enjoying it. Mate has over fifty bikes for me to work through so I’m doing one after another- you’ll be busy, trust me!

Atlas will be a quick job, so no storage is required. I will pull the auxiliary crash bar and bash plate off at my place. That's pretty fiddly, then trailer it over for a cold engine. At most, 2 hrs, probably.Unless the clutch grooves need filing. With luck, it's warped steel plates that are causing the clutch drag. You might even get a leg over it; I think you rode Yogis in Belingine, I think.

You need a working workshop and a bike store- I’ve got a dirty workshop for degreaser, compressor, grinders etc and the clean one for just working on bikes. If you’ve got too much about it makes it hard- put fire extinguishers everywhere and don’t keep petrol inside- I know you know but easy to get into bad habits. Remember what your worth, don’t do anything cheap and if in doubt chuck new parts at it. My old boss welded a centre stand for a guy who couldn’t afford new one- it cracked later and we were all the c#nts under the sun! Real old school mechanics like us are few and far between..I also keep a full written account of what I’ve done and customer gets a copy, covers your arse after the event. Best of luck!

Good Stuff Marty. One of the best things I did . Quite a few years ago now.

When I started working for myself my uncle gave me some advice:
1: paperwork is work, you’re supposed to do it during working hours.
2: prioritize: invoicing the work you’ve completed, then do the work you’ve got, then quotes for the work you might not win.
3:better to have a reputation for expensive quality, than fast and cheap.
