Balance pipe diameter?

I've got some replacement carbs for my SF1 that need a different manifold.
There's a huge difference in diameter of the balance pipe. One hole measures barely 2mm the other is a generous 4.5mm. That's over 5 times the area.

Thoughts please?

I doubt it will make any difference - never actually understood what the tube is supposed to do. I reckon you could blank each one off and notice no change. I sed mine once to connect vacuum gauges. Don't use them any more either. What carbs are you fitting?
 
I understand the more important thing is to make sure they are blocked off when the bike is being used to stop air being drawn in and leaning the mixture and ruining your pistons etc.

Dellortos. I got them lightly used and slightly abused

The two manifolds are connected together by a pipe when in use.
 
I lost a blanking bolt once on a ride, thankfully a couple of ks before I stopped for the day. It killed that cylinder, it had been popping on the overrun for a while and I had resealed the exhaust thinking that was it. Nope, the shop that serviced it had not tightened these bolts, one fell out and the other 2 were loose, finding replacements in Tamworth wasn't fun but thankfully no damage and an easy fix. Finding that open hole and sticking my finger over it and getting 3 cylinders running was a big relief.
 
The original is 500% bigger in surface area.
Well, you can drill and tap the intakes before mounting for some larger take offs.
Or leave as is and do it later if you can across carb setup problems you attribute to the diameter.
Or if you use a depression instrument to balance the carbs and that the depression is insufficient.

it's actually pretty tricky to drill them larger because the hole is flush up against the flange so I'm going to need some serious 'motivation' to do so as it's a mill and job and possibly a custom fitting on the lathe.

Size of the vacuum take-offs is absolutely irrelevant, as long as they're both the same for carb balancing purposes (depending on the sensetivity of the vacuum equipement involved). For anything else, it don't matter...

If the connection actually balances anything at idling is largely theoretical. The hose connection between the two is more practical than seperate caps imho.
