Battery drain

Well that's what I was using it on Keith so to me they are an expensive failure.
Maybe my fault but I can do without the hassle.
I'd rather have the half ton certainty of a golf cart battery.

They don't work with Diesel in them either, is that the faut of the fuel or the guy operating the pump?

  RTFM   :D

Mine was fucked from the start Keith, unfortunately a helpful dealer binned mine before I could send it back.
...and dont be silly.  :D

I enquired of Odyssey if an Optimate 4 was suitable for a PC680, the reply was,

Good morning Dave,

I would suggest contacting the charger manufacturer if you do not currently own this model charger. The only listed TecMate manufactured charger that is approved (tested) by EnerSys/ODYSSEY is the Accumate 7A 12V-7A-S which will full charge and maintain the ODYSSEY PC680 battery and meets the following requirement's

1) 3-step charging profile
2) Absorption charge voltage between 14.2-14.8V required with 14.4-14.8 being recommended
3) Constant Float voltage between 13.5-13.8V required with 13.6V being optimum
4) Never exceeds a constant voltage of 15.0V in any kind of automatic reconditioning/equalize/de-sulphation mode.
5) For cyclic (deep discharge) applications a minimum charging current of 40% of the 10 hour amp hour rating of the battery is required. The minimum recommended charging current for a PC680 at 16Ah rating would be 6A.

If the charger meets these requirements I would also recommend a minimum of 8 hours in float mode to ensure that the battery is fully charged as many chargers go into float mode prematurely for the ODYSSEY battery therefore the battery is not truly fully charged at that point, even if the charger indicates so. Any ODYSSEY battery can be left on float indefinitely with a Float voltage between 13.5-13.8V without harming the battery.

I hope this helps. Please contact me if you have any further questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Kathy Mitchell

Unfortunately I can't get one of these, (or at least, can't find one yet!) out of the US of A and then it is a bit pricey including postage/import duties. I guess it is a plow through charger specs to make sure that they meet the specification laid down by Odyssey, (IE, the CelTek ones spec) as I don't want/can't afford to trash the one I already have, (I will get around to putting the motor back in the Zane soon, but at least it isn't going to blow up sitting on the bench without a head on it yet!).
"Cest La Vie!"

Dave, Motorworks recomend the Ctek with their Odysseys, give them a call they are very helpful.

So turns out the battery drain was caused by a loose ground wire on the new steel coil bracket i installed to replace the badly cracked stock aluminium one. I had checked everything else out and all seemed fine, lots of head scratching etc etc - then thought maybe i screwed something up when installing the coils, pulled a wire somewhere etc -  sure enough pulled the tank off and there was a loose wire staring right at me - how embarrassing!  tightened up and holding charge like a champ :o

Last week I helped check over a friends Z1b which he has recently refurbished.
Brand new Yuasa battery was going flat in a week.
It has a brand new loom and switchgear and a combined regulator rectifier fitted instead of the original two part kit.
Downloaded a check list from the Electrex website (not the source of the reg/rec)and ran through the checks.
Bingo, one of the diodes in the reg/rec unit was shorted and giving a 70mA current drain.
It was easy to follow and all we needed was a ?5.99 Screwfix multimeter.
He had been through all the connectors and switches even partly dismantling it assuming he had
made a mistake somewhere.
The unit is rubber mounted and the short showed up through the ground wire from the casing to the battery.
When he checked originally he hadn't connected the ignition and reg/rec seperate earths to the battery.
