Hi All
I am to buy new sparkplug caps for my 1200 running a serie 1 witt  what should I buy
Standart black ngk, red silecone ones or ?

Whichever you choose, they must have 5-10 kilo ohms resistance, the DMC may not last much longer if they don't!  You will at least run into mis-firing problems.  5 kilo ohms are quite common, they will suit the DMC fine.

My choice is waterproof silicone rubber, from Bosch, Beru or Champion, have a distinctive dislike for all things NGK on a Laverda. :D

Why is that? Is there something about them I should avoid? Have seemed fine to me, but I am always open to suggestions.

cheers

Pete,

The lack of real waterproofing is one reason for me to avoid the plug caps, have had quite a few NGK caps burn their resistors, possibly a vibration issue.  I find the heat ranges of the plugs sub-optimal for the old bangers.

Sold literally thousands of NGK plugs, glow-plugs and accessories in my former life, never had the slightest issue, so it's definitely not a quality thing.

Apart from that, the first spark plug I ever bought new, back in 1969(?), was kaputt in the box... might have something to do with that. :D

Piet,

Thanks for that. Maybe I will give some different ones a try when I replace the 3C caps.

Never had a problem with NGK on any bike, car, outboard motor, lawnmower ...
Occasionally had them foul, but that's down to poor maintenance, bad tuning or ignition problems, not the plug's fault.
I don't recall ever having a dead one out of the box. I've not found the heat ranges difficult to live with either.

I reckon I'll stick with them mainly because I'm familiar with the numbering system. If I look at an NGK, I know exactly what it is from the number. But with a Champion, KLG, AC Delco, etc. I'm lost. The numbering system may as well be in heiroglyphics for all it tells me. I know you can look up a reference table in the shop when buying them, but I always feel a little uneasy doing that (if the correct NGK isn't available). I have no reason to think there's anything wrong with non-NGK plugs, it's simply my own lack of experience with them.

Not had any problem with NGK caps either. Only time I've ever had to replace one was because it was busted in a crash.

Cheers,
Cam

Why voulds the ohm number 5-10 have something to do whith the DMC lifespan?

Because the DMC electronics are laid out to cope with it... ::)

I do suggest you RTFM. :D

Ditto from me. Been the old faithful B9ES in the 750 since the day Bosch changed their numbers from 260, 240 etc, and NGK plug caps since the mid-70s; hi comp (10.5:1), racing, high-speed touring/blasting, commuting - never missed a beat. Never trusted Champions, far too '44 Dodge and a little too close to my HR Holden red motor for my liking! :o
