I'm struggling to locate some big end needle roller bearings for a 500 and wondered if anybody could point me in the right direction. The original cages are in excellent condition so a set of loose needles will do the trick. The needle size is 5mm x 7mm [there are two per slot in the cage]
Failing that  5x14 will suffice. The actual size of the caged bearing is 35 x 45 x 19.7. I can locate steel caged bearings in these sizes but I can't find any with a light aluminium cage as per the original .
Keith tells me these bearings are as a rare as a Scotsman wearing underpants. I've spent a week calling round various suppliers and I'm starting to believe him.

INA are very difficult to deal with (as Keith has already found out) - I do seem to remember that Chris Applebee modified the rods big end and used an imperial oversize roller - why not grind a longer 5mm roller to suit - a pain but maybe the only way for small numbers. I can't remember if the cage has a centre bar or just the 14mm length - if the latter - i dont see why it would not be possible to use an8mm and 6mm roller - of course - these may noyt be easy to get either - HTH - Phil

Good tip Phil , although at the moment I'm trying to avoid individually grinding 68 rollers! I had no idea these bearings were so specific to Laverda and so hard to source...

You maybe in the camp of not Mr Bell, and you may want new and they may not suit, but I know he has just broken an Alpino prob no help but one never knows.

I take it that you have tried "www.simply bearings"
I started useing this firm followiing recomendations from forum members and have always been pleased,

but hang on Bob, one of the main problems with the Chott (not 2TR) was the aluminium caged big ends,
now might be the time to get a bit more "beef" while you are at it, Chris Applebee has been getting some stick from forum members and I would include myself as not "overly impressed" but he may well, be able to modify for a more available bearing, he achieved great things (which have proved reliable) with Nick Alcocks 100 single, Kawsaki big end I think.

Big end rollers used in the Laverda motors are non prefered sizes, I do have a man at INA who was very helpful in finding me a large quantity of 5 x 17.8 triple type rollers, he is currently on the case..It is not the aluminium cages that are the problem Clem, there must be millions out there, that is the accepted method to control rollers in a big end bearing, I suspect the problems the Chott suffered are caused by inadequate lubrication not choice of cage material.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't hesitate to use steel cage big end bearings.

I've been using Japanese big ends - mainly Yamaha - in a number of motors for years now. TT600 in Aermacchis is one which has been notably successful. All of them are steel cage and all get thoroughly abused...

If the 500's were being made now they's use steel cage bearings - if the cost accountants didn't insist on plain bearings.

If all else fails I live approx' 10 miles from an Ina Bearings manufacturing plant (worked there once for 2 months approx 23 years ago) and if i can get hold of them used to play rugby with some guys working there. Not sure what bearings (if any, the mostly do tappets) they are manufacturing in this particular plant (Bynea) these days as so much has changed since I was there but could always try and raise some questions.

Bob, check out http://www.peters-bearing.de, they seem to have the 5x7 rollers in stock. They list them also with oversized diameters in steps of 1/100 mm, maybe helpful when you perform some refinishing of the conrod's big end bores.

Regards,
Stefan

Stefan, Many, many thanks, that's a fantastic link. I've emailed them and hopefully they can supply. Many thanks for everyone's advice, all gratefully recieved and appreciated.
Bob
PS Tye, if some reason Peters can't supply then perhaps we need to tap into the Welsh rugby fraternity :D
