Bodge of the year? WTF?

So just getting into the engine ,head off  cleaned but not dismantled..bagged up the buckets and shims...all great until I get to the middle inlet valve assy. Bucket and shims look good but the top of the valve stem and one side of the valve spring cap are showing coarse grinding marks, as if the head has been held up against a grinding wheel....these look very fresh or raw and don't look as if the bike has run since this was done as there is no flattening of the grind marks.
Is this a BS way to fix or disguise a sinking valve...
I did check the clearances before pulling the head and they were on or over, nothing under..
Any ideas?

Shim that jumped off in the past?

That's a neat solution but I would have expected for see some sort of circular scaring distributed evenly across the surfaces ..this looks seriously like coarse file or grinder and only on one portion of the spring cap..
I'll have a go at the photos tonight.

See it or similar all the time, backyard bodgers favourite!  Was always a strong runner... ::)

Some people simply cannot accept their engine is knackered and might require a bit of cash and effort to bring it back to an acceptable standard.  Bodge follows bodge, follows bodge, until the poor thing cries enough.  If it were a horse, it would have had to been put down long ago.

If that's the case should I assume I have sinking valve syndrome.?

You probably just have a worn out head Paul.

Yep..I definitely have one of those....that's how I ended up buying this bike!!!

So next question is can you you buy a refurbished head ready to bolt on? Or get this one rebuilt with new seats, guides valves springs etc...
Or just re lapp these valves fit new seals and be done..only ever going to be a Sunday rider over here...
My heart says do the job right..but my head says when are you ever going to enjoy the benefits of a rebuilt motor..

I suppose it all begs the question - is it possible to have anything freighted internationally at the moment? I'm working on a high end 80s Colnago bicycle for a client at the mo and it needs parts, most of which are sourced OS, but I'm not willing to try and buy online if there's an indefinite delay on shipping. If planes ain't flying, how could there be freight?

So Paul, your best solution to 'do it right' would be to ship your head somewhere that can do the full reco - and if there aren't any cracks in the CC it may prove very doable without having to weld and the like.

All the major freight companies have their fleets of airliners stripped out just for cargo. Some of the stuff on Castaway was true. I can't see why they wouldn't be flying now, other than lack of working staff in various businesses to send stuff on them from most countries.

There are plenty of planes still flying. Mostly freight I assume. Just have a look at Flight Tracker https://planefinder.net/

World economy would really grind to a halt if there was no freight service. So I reckon you'd be OK ordering stuff from overseas. I had a parcel from UK delivered yesterday - a book I bought on ebay a couple of weeks ago.

I had a pallet air freighted from Taiwan, faster than normal. Containers from China, no problems. Containers from Italy? We have two sitting somewhere, each one is now costing AU$1500 per fortnight. That was a one off congestion fee, which went monthly, now fortnightly.

DHL still delivers parcel, no problems.

The French have two 40ft containers of ours awaiting shipment from Brittany, they should just push them over the cliff, eventually we would get them, trade winds willing.

Buy as normal I say. It will turn up, eventually.

Hi all,
In terms of costs in sending a heavy items.

I sent two quite heavy boxes both approx 40 kg from UK to Australia last year via TNT.

I was quite surprised that the cost was only approx ?200 each !!!!
Took around 10 working days.

Compare that to send say a few kilos via Royal Mail 25/30 pounds.

Re postage costs..there is a huge variance in costs both directions from here . I bought Gsxr wheels for Oz..front came air in a week $120..rear came seafreight 3weeks. $50.
My R80ST ally rim  to the states for truing $25 3 days via EMS through the post office.
Unfortunately the post office is closed for the time being..only fedex currently and they are horribly costly.
The good news is that my head has the steel seats so maybe things won't be as bad as I had initially thought.
