Bolt length

I lost an alternator bolt on The Snowy Run and had a fiddle with it today. The existing bolt only goes into the case approx 5mm and the actual hole isn't much deeper. The bolt I have measured at 36mm shank length, its countersunk so that allows it to go in slightly more than a square-headed alan bolt. Having nearly 5mm out past the alternator cover seems a bit short to me. This bolt is a special, it's an alan head that's been turned down to a countersink and a reduced head circumference so it fits well into the cover hole. What's a good length for these bolts? I think I might also buy a plugging tap and clean out the case threaded holes as well.
 
It's not quite as painful as having my original plastic side cover run over a few years ago but close, there a neat tidy gadget there Red. I wish I still had both. Next time I will add some middle strength Locitie I think.

I ordered some slotted countersunk screws to fit my alternator cover on my series 1 Mirage.
Just checked the order details from Spalding and they were 40mm and fitted perfectly without altering them.

What's its length Tom, I was heading down to Econ Steel the new owners of Bomond Trading Nuts and Bolts at Brooky tomorrow as I need to nip the alternator cover up to wash the bike, it's fossilised since doing all that rain riding on the Snowy. I am concerned one of them doesn't go far enough into the case to hold. I would be ecstatic to borrow one Tom if ok. I have a car full of Country crap I couldn't get rid of so a trip to Kimbricy Tip would help on the way as well.
 
Mine measure 36mm, 40mm would be better if they don't bottom out. Hard to say without actually trying it. That shank length, eg not including the head of the bolt.
 
I replaced mine maybe 15 years ago. My original had a huge weld repair where it had been dragged in corners, my bike according to one of the NSW Laverda Club original members was used as a race practice bike by Paul Walkley a previous owner who raced. Wolfgang had 3 options for replacements expensive, slightly cheaper and even more cheaper. I opted for the middle one. The point being maybe these 3 options have slightly different thicknesses and need slightly different holding bolt lengths. I need to chase this bloke up and ask about the history of my bike.

I managed a trip to Kembriky Tip to clear out my car plus I got a couple of Reds special bolts from Tom. These measured 40mm and Tom cleared out the countersink a bit in the cover and linished the graze it got when I dropped it parking on the Snowy Ride, so all sorted now. Thanks again, Tom. The cover is now nice and snug.
