Spotted the thunderbird for what it was straight away, the roller is set well back, too far perhaps, hence the very upright rider position as wind break... very different than the usual Derny. Never had the chance to ride any form of Keirin, was for senior racers, was a juvi and Junior racer. All the same we used to sit behind the interstate trucks, maximum of a foot or two, as if you were further away the wind gusts would knock you about so much or worse flip you...
We put on a 56T front ring gear and 12 tooth rear sprocket, even then we had trouble with cadence, couple of hoons in a car alongside said we were doing 92kph going into a sweeper, nearly collected the car of hoons as we did not ( cannot see ) the road ahead, when we heard the truck engine revs drop we would hit the brakes, had less than a second to react. Whites and Kenworth trucks would out accelerate us at higher speeds... saw my mates once go past and it looked bloody dangerous! The cops used to chase us and let our tyres down, to stop us, we would see tham and one mate would peel off with a pump on board.... it was something else to ride the high bank tracks, way more steep than looking on as spectator...then there was the "balance" sprint race skill, still do it today, can hold for about 60-90 seconds, dependent on wind gusts.... more ramble... FWIW.
