Bosch starter hatred

Seeing as how the 1200 is in bits, I decided to check the Bosch starter out.
Good move!
One of the 4 brush holders had pivoted, the brush was running at about 45 degrees to the commutator.
The brushes were largely shagged.
Seems Bosch aren't too good at riveting things together.

Every Bosch starter I ever had gave me grief...

Had the brush holders rotate on my starter motor about twenty years ago, re-aligned them and araldited in place, no problems since.

35 years is a good innings for a Bosch starter. I guess they must have made the odd good one  :D.
I think I will straighten the brush holder out, improve the riveting, clean up and undercut the commutator, and fit new brushes. It was still cranking, so hopefully everything else is still OK.
Fortunately I have a spare SJCE starter if all else fails.

As for the nut behind the handlebars, also working for more than 35 years, but has been dodgy for a long time...
Hard to start in the mornings plus high fuel consumption. :D

I couldnt agree more with my mate Steve B (big hug for Christianne while we are at it)

Yeah, couldn't agree more!  35-odd years and still working, but starting to fail... complete rubbish!
:D

come to think of it the mag dyno on my 78 year old Sunbeam Lion (20,000 miles from new) is strting to fail, the bike starts OK when cold, but doesnt like "avin it" when it is hot, so I am guessing the condensors in the mag (internall in the coil windings) will be getting stuffed, must get that sorted, but also complete rubbish ?

hi, there's a guy selling new brush's on the ebay ( laverda) and they work.
you will need something like a old file get it as hot as possible and use it to de solder your rivets then drill out rivets and poke copper wire through, reheat file  and use it as a heat sink to resolder the new brush's in (normal soldering iron will not put enough heat in on its own).
have just redone my old 3ce :) :) :).
item number 111060604858.
regards and safe riding andy

I bought the brushes from the guy on Ebay, really cheap, fast delivery.
They look fine & fit perfectly.
Soldering them won't be a problem, I have an oxy- acetylene welding set. :D :D

I followed Terry's adviced and Araldited them in place. ( having cleaned and keyed everything properly first)
Expect it will hold.
