Brake Pads

Doc,

There are 2 different rear MC and lever systems for the RGS.

Either 12 or 15mm MCs were fitted, these necessitated different levers, either 39 or 55mm long, part #s 43 311 181 and 43 311 188 respectively.  The longer lever is for the larger MC.  If these parts get mixed up, your brake will remain simply ballast, no matter how good the condition of individual components!

The levers are the outer ones that are located through the footrest hangers and are actuated by the pedal.

New seals in both caliper and MC and then properly bled can work wonders, my RGS rear brake actually works!

That's good info Piet. Many thanks. I'll check mine when I get back home. I'm sure few RGS owners knew about this. Is there any way of checking which master cylinder is which (12 or 15mm) without taking everything off the bike?

Thanks again

DoC!

Some master cylinders have a number cast into the casing [ie 12 , 14 or 15] which identifies the size. Worth having a look ...

I just put some copper sintered pads in the back brake of argy and they feel good, As recommended for cast iron discs by grumpy Tommy at Don Newels. Says they are working well on the cast discs on the older guzzis and reckons they do less disc wear than the kevlar organic ones. He might be full of shit too.....?

For what it's worth. Had the same problem on my RGS; rear brake so bad as to be completly useless. Solved by dis-assembling the shaft that goes through the muffler/rear footpeg carrier and giving it a good grease. Solved the problem. Worth a try IMHO.
