..what a clickbait subject!

here's a short report of what happened 3 years ago to my 1998 750S.
I started noticing some BAAAAD noises firing up the engine. the noises you definetly don't want to hear.

they suddently disappear when I stop the starter motor, and you don't hear anything with the engine fired up.

it's clear that i need to open the right case, afraid of what i can find..
well.. this is what i found

fortunately, i know some very good workshop, because of my job, so i ask them some help.

and this is the result! They welded some aluminium on the crankcase, rebuilding the support of the pin. then they machined the surfece and the hole on a 3axis mill.
I asked to add some material to prevent brakes in the future, and I asked to bore the hole a bit larger, so i can fit a bushing inside, to reduce stresses.

I also built a new couples of ignition gears, lowering the ratio, to even more reduce stresses on the support and to help the starter motor.
