Cables for Smiths clocks

Please stop me if you've been asked this already:  if a set of Smiths clocks known to be of correct type for an early Laverda SF are used instead on a '72 model that originally came with ND clocks, then do you need to change out the ND speedo and tacho cables for different items?  Or will SF ND cables work fine with Smiths clocks as well?

TIM

Thank you, gentlemen.

I presume these parts (speedo drive, tacho drive) for the Smiths-clocked Lavs are still available?

I will next enquire with the relevant Laverda parts emporia.

Thanks again

TIM

There are also two different Smith's speedometers. One goes up to 220 and the other 240. Both use different gearing.

Tim,
I'd be really interested to know the results of your enquiries (as it saves me a load of work  :D) as I will be fitting a Smiths SFC revcounter to a triple shortly. The bike originally had ND clocks - I don't know if there is any difference in the drive unit for ND/Smith models - I am hoping not. If anyone still supplies suitable cables I'll be over the moon. :o :o

Afraid you'll have to make your own cable Chris.  These clocks were never fitted to the earlier triples (they were fitted to the first batch of 1000SFC, but the 120 engine has a different drive set up at the cam box), so no stock cable will work.  The drive "square" for the Smiths clocks is larger than for the NDs, a new/good ND cable with a nicely formed square may work for a short time before it rounds off and turns loosely inside the clock drive.  The nut has the same thread, so all OK there, as is the drive ratio.

I have gotten around the problem by wrapping a layer of metal foil around the square drive bit.  The material from a metal polish (Autosol, etc) tube is ideal, a single layer is enough to take up the free play and keep the drive connected reliably.  Has worked for me for the past 25 years.

A suitable cable can be made at JJ Cables here in the UK Chris...they do the different sized drive ends, custom length etc etc  01926 651470.  Sorted my similarly equipped spaceframe no problem.  :)  Even came up with a shortened ferrule to cope with the tight 90 130 degree bend under the tank (although did mutter about a daft design that had the cable exiting the cambox vertically!)

Don't use a Smith clock that is NOS or hasn't be used for a long time
right away. Let it get serviced (cleaned and re-oiled) before, otherwise
it will break down after a short mileage!

HI!
I have also 1972 Laverda 750 SF and I?m also about to change Nippon Denso speedometer (ratio 9T/25T) into Smiths speedometer (ratio 12T/15T).

I have the drum brake type shown in the picture below. Is it Grimeca?s or Laverdas? older/newer drum brake type?

Gentlemen, do know, is there differences between Laverda drum brakes? internals? (Does the 12T speedometer gear & 15T speedometer drive gear fit into my 1972 Laverda drum brake?)

Not only the cables!
They have different drives in the wheel, too.

Hi, Matti.
That's the older Laverda drum brake.
As far as I remember 12/15 should fit and
11/22 is for early GTs.
Maybe someone here could confirm this?
