Cables

Steve B has just fitted the Suzuki throttle to my 1200. I'm hoping he will chime in as he is a stickler for detail and will have done the right thing with the cables......

Had the same problem with Flexi Drive,Perth, sent a detailed drawing as well as 2 new cables [incorrect length for my bike] that came with the twist grip I brought so they had the correct fittings. They carged me $120 for the 2 cables :o :o :o and it looked like it was done by the drop kick junior. One cable, the free length was 10mm too long and the fittings looked like they'd be clamped in a rough jawed vice. Sent them back and when returned it was only 5mm too long!!. No point sending them back a 3rd time so I made spacers to take up the slack.
Hooning home last Sunday 10 kays from home the pull nipple broke at the twist grip. They lasted a total of about 5000 kays.
Just ordered a new Motion Pro throttle and cables from Red for just over half the cost of those 2 cables!!

As for cutting the cables, inner and outer I use a 1mm thick cutting wheel on my 5" grinder. Works a treat.

Similar report for me re Flexidrive, but throw in a "Can't be done in Perth. We have to ship to to Melbourne."

I'll buy the bits and do it myself next time.

Sounds like some one should start a business making motorcycle cables?

Before I found Phil's extender clutch arm I was so desperate to reduce the pull I tied a gadget that mounts between the upper clutch arm and the original cable that reduced the pull with an internal lever system. The original cable went in one side and a short cable came out the other and connected to the upper original lever.Way to complicated but it did work for a month till the short cable broke. There was a bloke making cables who advertised in Revs and I visited and had one made.He was a German bloke, toolmaker by trade and the cable was a work of art.He is long gone,I expect less demand for cables than you might think.

Someone did start a business making motorcycle cables, here in Tasmania. I won't mention his name, but he's an ex-sidecar racer so he knows a thing or two about motorcycles and what motorcyclists are likely to ask for.

He's a bit pricey, but I went to him a few years ago because I needed some cables in a hurry and was prepared to pay his prices for a quick service. He promised the cables in a couple of days. After a month had gone by (and I'd sourced suitable cables from ebay USA in the meantime), I went and saw him to ask whether he was ever going to do the job. I'm a pretty easy-going sort of bloke, but I wasn't happy with his service so I told him so. He said he had a lot of big industrial clients and small jobs for motorcyclists weren't a priority. So I told him not to bother. That's when he spat the dummy and chucked me out of his shop, ranting that he didn't have time to waste on motorcycles. Seems to me he has forgotten the people who supported his business when he first started out.

His receptionist is a lovely lady. She looked very embarrassed and shrugged apologetically at his outburst, indicating that she couldn't do anything about it. Anyway, I am now persona-non-grata as far as he is concerned. I've since found I'm not the only one. He has a fierce temper and has often chucked customers out.

sweetas got some made up in eight mile plains-got me fucked why you want get them made when red has quality ones on the shelf?

Let me know if you find a good cable maker, Cam. I'm in the market for a decent front brake cable for 1173. A good drum brake shouldn't feel spongey and so I suspect the outer cable is compressing too much. Braking performance makes a poorly set up conical hub look good. Someone suggested trying a marine control cable so I'll ask around the marine outfitters in town this morning. Anyone have other suggestions?

GTReiner has ready made push/pull throttle cables to suit Suzuki GT750 for Euro 45 the pair = ~GBP 36. They will bolt straight onto the Suzuki ND throttle/switch body and Mik carbs.

Venhills want GBP60 for a 2 cable kit.

GTReiner1@aol.com

Cost me Euro 138 for the throttle body, cables, and postage (and cover for paypal fee). Throttle body looks identical to the original ND unit except for the push pull.
