Cam Chain Sprockets Alignment?

Many thanks to all contributing.  The straightedge method of aligning the sprockets makes sense.

I put the No. 1 piston at TDC before putting the head back on, so with the marks on the sprockets aligned with the tops of the center bearing caps, no valve to piston introductions should occur.  I will check with the pointer on the crank after putting the primary back together, as well, since the No. 1 piston could be on it's compression/power stroke at TDC, not exhaust/intake.

If it's up, it's up.  The cams define power or overlap stroke...

Never seen anything like that, is it seriously an Audi engine?

NGK B9ES (or EV if you can get them, Gold Palladium tips)
The 9 is the heat range for high comp triples, and the 8 range (for NGK) is the range for lower comp engines.

Looks like my Touareg FSI v-8, chains on the back of the engine, 55hrs labour to change a chain tensioner, ask me how I know!
