Just found a nice way to keep the chain under tension while serving the valve job.
Works great.

Hi Corn,
don't forget to apply a load to the camshaft of the valve you're just measuring to eliminate any play in the bearings. This will determine the smallest possible valve clearance, which is what you should be aiming for.

If you can think of a solution as good as the one for the camchain, please share it!
:D

Oh, yes, maybe this.... :- D
But honestly, if the bearings are so slacki, that your valve clearence is in danger, than it would be better to get new ones.
I cant imagine, that it is such a difference. Do you think the play of the bearing has so much influence of the valve clearence, while the cam shaft ist turning?

AFAIU from Piet the camchain pulls the cams down when the engine is running. At least the exhaust more than the inlet. And as a to low play is more dangerous than a to high one, it will ensure, that you are on the safe side as far as a burnt valve is concerned. Piet mentioned 0.05 difference in play with loaded/unloaded measuring ...

Ok, that meakes sense. But than it is even better to have some safety clearance. At volkswagen development they often take the tolerance and then the tolerance of the tolerance. Maybe thats the reason why was not so convinced.
