Cam re-profiling

Evening all,

I’m hoping for some recommendations.

I’d like a pair of sf 6c cams re-profiling to 5c spec and coated. Does anyone know of a company or individual in the Uk that can do this?

Many thanks Steve

Could that even be possible? I can see that the shape of the cams
could be modified to match the 5C shape.
But they have different timings.
5C:
In 42/74
Ex 64/52
6C:
In 62/88
Ex 87/67
Like I understand this you'd have to cut the camshafts and
weld them together in a different position to get 5Cs.

I thought standard SF 5/1 cams were In 42/74 and Ex 64/52 and 5C cams were In 52/78 and Ex 78/47?

The 6/C is 'broader' than the 5/C so you could theoretically have the 6 reduced to a 5 profile, but then it would need to be nitrided for hardening (definitely not coated!). I tend to agree with Paul that buying a 5/C might be more expedient - and sell the 6/C if you'll never use it.

5/C not to be confused with the SF1 5/1.

Nothing that a layer of weld can't fix. ;)

I once had a rusty old "S" cam for a 100 repaired with laser welding, to fill the deep rust pits mainly, one lobe was half-gone. Weld was rated at 65HRC, plenty hard to cope without further heat treatment. Re-profiled the lobes myself, not so dramatic on a single, worked just fine!
