Anyone else have issued with leaking fuel tank caps.Is there any varations with hing locations,front or rear.If it leaked how did you fix it or do you just keep the level low.Sny rxpiriance with those rubber top hat inserts good or bad
 
Hey Vince, I have both front and rear hinged caps and neither leak, you can buy replacement old style caps but Im sure you know that.
one on my Jota is original, no leaks, just lucky I guess.

... original Laverda tank caps are always leaking, if not it is not original! ;)
Don't fill your tank up to the top!

The reason why I was brimming the tank back then was the big distances we travel between towns. Heading back to Sydney from the first Philip Island GP we wanted to do some remote dirt in The Snowy Mountains and that ended up at 350ks, and that required a refuel at some one-horse General Store with a fuel bowser along that route. Even now with lots of petrol stations closing in the bush Marty is always calculating 200k stops for refuels on big rides. On one trip to Adelaide and back via the coast, we were regularity finding just over 200ks between towns.

Yeah, maybe I should change that to, only minimal leaks.
a bit more true Gert :)
 
The best ones I had were from Slaters..never hardened like those from Motalia..dunno if they still trading though, mixed messages.
 
Mine originally had the flat-top, rear-hinged fuel cap. I have tried the portruding-centre front-hinged caps. I've had the flexible-insert tube in the tank since the '80s.
If you fill it to the very top and stand it on its nose with the brakes, it'll leak, no question.
The only time I'll fill it, that full, is when I do a high-mileage, motorway trip.
For normal road-scratching, only fill to about an inch and a half below the neck, to avoid the problem.
 
Hmm all very interesting 🤔 so my poor old Jota with a full tank should have leaked chasing the cosmonaut from Kyogle 🤔
Maybe that?s why I smelt fuel and there?s a yellow stain on the tank
Anyways twist the dam throttle more  and ya fuel level quickly drops then it?s not a problem me thinks end of story
Vince your bike don?t got a standard cap 🧢 last I looked

I just did the same thing 2 weeks ago, using a regular rubber seal from a toilet from Leroy Merlin.

Had to drill some holes into it, as initial fitting was so good it would create vacuum in the tank and starve the engine.

After drilling some holes, it?s leaking again.

I love wasting time...

ah yes, the French Leroy merlin, great shop, you can look for bits in them for days, and Giovanni L is a manager in an Italian one!

I found a combination of a locking version of the rear hinge cap and the "top hat" rubber insert provided a 99% cure. The lock mechanism circular barrel on the underside of the cap mates/inserts into the top hat when closed and provides a pretty good seal.Always remove the top hat insert when bike not in use to avoid deformation.
