Carb Pipes

From various images inc the attached, what I assume to be breathers are often interlinked. What is the correct set up chaps, mine have no pipes at all just open stubs🤔IMG_0998.png
 
If you have a triple then yes, balance pipes were fitted. I think it was claimed to improve tickover. Generally pipes are cut to length rather better than shown in your picture! Some folk don't bother and fit blanking screws in place of the threaded take-off adaptors (DellOrto part no 11845). In either case a fibre washer helps prevent air leaks and weak running.

Those pipes weren't fitted to early triples and can be dispensed with if the take off is covered. Running may be a bit rougher. The only important thing is that there's no air leak.

Imho, the "balance" tube is to simplify the balancing procedure. A possible advantage is the theoretical possiblity that minor variations in idle adjustment can be disguised through balancing them out over all carbs. Later japanese bikes almost universally adopted permantly fitted take-offs, albeit usually closed with a rubber cap. The balance hose makes a lot of sense given the position of the take-offs on the carbs. And due to the length and general inaccessability of the central intake stub in particular, the hose is probably the only sensible solution.

Anybody that has fitted vacuum take-offs to an installed bank of carbs on the triple can probably relate very well. The blanking plugs are a royal pain to remove and replace, I have lost count of the blanking plugs I have found in the crevice under the starter motor.

Anybody that thinks he/she can do without vacuum balancing... well, good luck and carry on. :rolleyes:

You need to keep the take offs, part 66 so as to balance easily, but the pipe, parts 67, 68 and 69 isn't absolutely necessary as long as the takeoffs are blocked for running.
