Case Stamping Etiquette

I’m wondering what is acceptable when stamping new cases. I purchased a 500 Montjuic in parts from a forum member recently. It has matching numbered frame and crankcase and title, but the case is damaged where a rod came out the front. Stuart gave me a new unused and unstamped case which I will use to build the engine. Can I stamp the old numbers on the new case? Is there an established way of noting replacement cases? I was thinking of cutting the numbers out of the original case and fashioning a key chain to keep with the bike. I don’t want to unintentionally misrepresent any aspect of the motorcycle. Thanks - Ben

General comment, getting any changes to look factory isn't easy. I think there are odd shapes that don't come in your typical number punch kit. Getting the depth even close is hard. BTW I bought my kit as a 16-year-old Apprentice to punch my name into my tools. Years ago you could get a replacement Ducati frame but they insisted you cut your damaged frames gooseneck off and give it to them. Punching the new frames numbers is something I didn't hear about.

I think you need to restamp w/ original #'s as there may be a need to retain the match if bike is retitled in states/countries that record engine #. Perhaps note on registry if one exists. Good idea to save the old case, you may be able to laser weld repair it!

If it were me I’d leave it unstamped and keep the complete damaged case as an explanation.
My 750SFC threw a rod back in the day which trashed the case. New unstamped case supplied under warranty and has been that way for well over 40 years. If and when I sell the original cases go with the bike. If you want to restamp finding the original factory stamps would be an issue.

Recently saw a restamped triple motor where the original numbers had been removed therefor loosing the original sand cast finish and a genertic stamp used to restamp. Looked totally dodgy to me even though it was done legit. Personally I wouldve just gone with the non matching number and change the documents to suit. By restamping your not fooling anybody that knows anything about Laverdas.

I would leave the cases unstamped and try to get the original cases repaired. Advances in 3D metal printing is making almost anything possible.

Hi Paul. I meant ethically acceptable. In other words is there a standard for dealing with these situations. It sounds as if I should leave the new cases unstamped and hold the original cases. I can present them for a VIN check when titling.

A personal opinion.
If you do it, use the original font.
The only people who regularly stamp cases are people building fakes.
