Caveat emptor

I'm in the UK and have just spent a considerable amount of wedge with a certain German Laverda emporium. Although having already payed the 19% German VAT imagine my dismay when a letter from Royal Snail demanded £220 customs duty and import VAT, along with their fee for expediting the order through UK customs.
To avoid this double taxation I'll be keeping orders to below £135 inc postage and insurance in future. Once bitten!

Cheers,
A poorer, but wiser, Vince.

Mmmh - have ordered several parts from Italy, France and other countries in Europe, never had such problems. Why is it now so problematic for you Britts, please? Is it maybe the same root cause as Mr. Johnson want us to believe it is for the 100.000 missing truck drivers - Corona?

 Not sure...

You might try and ask for a refund. Charging tax where none is payable isn't legal even by the abysmal EUSSR standards. Trouble is it could take a lot of trouble to get nowhere for a (relatively) low amount that is probably a one off order. No taxation without representation and we are not represented in Germany.

I have had the same problem with a couple of German suppliers charging VAT on exports to Australia for a few years now. Should be zero rated.

Australia has an AUD 1,000 low value threshold on imports, unless purchased through a hosting platform such as ebay or Amazon.

(I should note that OCT and Laverda Paradise have always passed on VAT savings).

I thought that changed a few years ago. Isn't the eq of GST payable on all online international purchases?

As for charging 19% VAT on an export to GB - what a total ripoff. GB is essentially a duty free destination for Euro sellers now. But try getting the money they stole back ...

Aussie $1,000 exemption for goods unless:
1. The overseas vendor advertises directly into Australia (as opposed to merely listing on an overseas hosted website) and has significant turnover; or
2. Vendor sells via an online platform that advertises directly into Australia on behalf of vendors, e.g. ebay or Amazon.

$1,000 limit includes shipping & insurance, exchange rate on the day the goods are landed.

Different rules for online services such as data streaming.
