Centre stand woes

Don't know how you'd re-drill the lugs Cam.  No way to get a 17mm drill/mill bit in there, you'd need to cut them off the frame first...

Fair point Piet. I hadn't actually thought through the process of drilling the brackets while still welded to the frame. Brett's suggestion to use a right angle drill is about the only way I can think of to do it.

You could probably hire one from an equipment hire place. A right angle drill is a bugger of a thing to hold by hand, especially if drilling holes in steel any bigger than about 6mm, but would probably do the job OK if you went up in small increments from the pilot hole.

Now that Matt has found a crack, perhaps cutting them off, bevelling the edges and re-welding them properly with full penetration is the way to go. The hole repair would happen while they're off the frame. That would be the way I'd tackle it anyway.

Matt:  This is a highly stressed little bracket. At the very least, the crack needs to be ground out beyond its visible extents (crack may go further than you can see with naked eye) so that your new weld penetrates deeply into the joint. Don't be tempted to just run a bead of weld over the top of a crack and hope for the best. That would be a half-arsed job and would probably end up with the crack re-surfacing through the new weld.

starting off with an oval usually ends with an oval

Anyone can drill a round hole. Drilling an oval one is a work of art :D

Except a lot better than the Goose. Getting the Le Mans onto the centre stand is heavy lifting whereas I can put the Laverda up by standing on the tang as I dismount.

Yes, the Breganze guys probably weren't as pissed as those in Mandello del Lario Delirium... an infinitely better design.

This should get in there....

I used to weld a long time ago, but the last time I did any it looked like some sort of metal snot explosion. So after a lot of head scratching, I found somebody who knows how to weld properly (hopefully) and also has a lot of bike experience so it's going to him later in the week.

Breganzane - I might print off that suggestion and take it to him!

I like the way these little things play out, it turns out that the guy it's going to used to do the aluminium welding and head work for the two stroke tuner who lived across the road from me (until he died a few weeks ago). They did a lot of work on two stroke race bikes back in the day. Small world.

Cheers

Matt

Nice one Steve. I bet you went and dug out an old crappy drill bit and bent it just for that photo  :D

T'was just an internet photo I'm afraid.  Even ignoring the bend it looks like a typical chinesium drill bit, no good for anything.
