Ceriani Fork Oil Qty - Quick response needed

Fitting new seals to a 3CL with Ceriani's.

What is the oil capacity/ distance from the top. Oil capacity is easier.

Distance from the top if supplied. Is that with or without springs, and I assume, with the shock extended.

I'd rather more air than less, hence less compression for the seal to manage.

I don't want to start another never ending thread about different opinions. Just a quick generic guide.

And then the thought occurred if it is fitted with Racetech Emulators, do I have to subtract the equivelant volume of the emulators from the 200ml???

Try 180cc and see if the oil covers the top of the damper assembly - if you purge the air but can still hear gurgling when the legs sure fully extended then add until there is no gurgling. But I really don't think it will make any diff - I'd just whack in 200cc.
 
You will need a little bit more than 200ml because that will cover the damper rod by about half an inch. I have my emulator covered by about half an inch with the forks fully extended.
The measure from the top system is with the slider fully compressed (lifted up as far as it goes), without the spring. It is for setting the air gap above the oil. Many people use this method and fill as much oil as possible as with a minimum air gap you are effectively providing more "air spring" in addition to the normal fork spring. It also can see a higher volume of fork oil, which can take longer to get contaminated.
 
I "measured" the emulator today. It consumes 30ml of space. I'll start with 200ml and then top up until there is 1/2" above the emulator. Fitted 2 of 50*38*7mm/8mm seals from a '73 Ducati 760 GTS to each fork, and using Fuchs RSF10, which has a very good kinesthetic viscosity rating.

What did surprise me was that the shit metal pistons have expanded over the past five years to the point where they were getting tight in the staunchion. I had to skim them down in the lathe.

After assembling I did a few static compressions to settle the forks and I have a bit of oil weeping past the new seals.

I need to get it running before I can road test it but wanted to get input on potential issues (no signs of wear or scoring).
I fitted new single seals from Andy, the forks had two seals in before I stripped them but the new seals are too thick to allow two to be fitted.

You'd better wear teeth protectors, like boxers, because your teeth are at risk from aviating fork seals.

Did 3CLs have Cerianis?

3CLs (and early 1200s) had Cerianis until some time in 1978 I believe.

its a late 76 bike and came with 38mm Cerianis.

So experience says 380 is too much and I should stick with 200cc?

How about the single seal question, the new seal too thick to fit two and fat enough to seat properly and have the circlip make contact?
 
I put about 300cc into mine per leg, don't know exactly, as I go by oil level 15cm below stanchion top edge with forks fully compressed and springs removed. I'm using Wirth springs and the forks are working excellent in that setup. Space for oil seals should be taken up entirely to ensure square fit, otherwise leakage my occur, so adding a spacer to suit is recommended.

You should have 17mm from the bottom of the seal seat to the top of the circlip groove with Ceriani sliders. If the seals you got from Andy were 7mm wide you have space for a 3 mm wide circlip. I'm wondering if you don't have the seals seated fully if there isn't enough space for 2 seals.

I tried pressing a pair of seals fully into the forks but still couldn't uncover the circlip grove.
I spoke with Andy and he confirmed a pair wont fit but that it isn't normally a problem to fit one even without a spacer.
I do however agree that if the seal hasn't something to press against how can it be sure to be true.

I suspect Ill be pulling them apart again, any advice on where to get a seal of the original size or a pair that can fit would be appreciated.
Plan B, make a spacer!

Wolfgang sold me single seals with two  sealing lips.  Left a small gap but that's of no consequence.
