Also several different types used, picture would help. I got lots of broken ones, now I just use my arm, to the amusement of everyone. NSW highway code still has an offence listed for "slovenly hand signal"......
When I bought my 74 3C (in 1986) it had no indicators fitted, that was legal as it preceded ADRs. I used to use my right foot to indicate right hand turns, eventually decided to retrofit blinkers in a fit of self-preservation. The wiring was already there, just needed a second-hand blinker relay from the wreckers.

I like to use hand signals as I have little confidence that the pitiful glow-worm turn signals of the era are visible to today's car driver traffic in daylight but have to think each time, where am I now, do I do the left hand pointing over the head to signal right as proscribed in the US in times past and I'm sure the majority of road users in the US now have no clue about, or do I take my hand off the throttle and brake in UK and get rapid engine braking deceleration and signal with the right hand hoping they won't run into the back of me! Just flash the brake light and sees if that draws their attention!

Those CEV indicators tend to fail in the threaded holes that the lens fixing screws go into. It's a crappy design because there's not much plastic around those holes and they're self-tapping screws that put outward pressure against the hole bores. It's almost like they deliberately designed it to bust the sides of the holes out. Easy enough to repair by building up with epoxy and re-drilling the screw holes. The repair usually ends up stronger than the original, so I consider it an upgrade. It isn't visible when the lens is in place. I've lost count of the CEV indicators I've epoxied up over the years.
