Chain length

I never quite got the importance of the number of links unless you're buying off a big industrial roll, like the time I broke a chain 100ks out of Adelaide and the mate I sent to get a new one turned up with one 2 links to short. Mine comes in a cardboard box with maybe 10 links too many and I fit it and cut it to length with the swingarm as far forward as possible, and then hoping I haven't cut it too short, and that has happened with big regrets. Wouldn't it be a safer option to eyeball it in place instead of counting links? Or am I missing something obvious here?

The importance of the number of links is that if you buy a chain with ten links too few, you're not going anywhere.
In my local bike shop, I ask for 106 pins 530 and I usually get a few links too many, which I cut off. Because today, you ask for a chain for a Yamazuki 257 and the seller knows no more about it.

The bike is at my local bike shop (Aprilia dealer and a good pal) who has a suitably meaty chain walloping tool.

He wanted to know so that he can pick the most effective pre-sized 530 chain out of his stock.

All done & dusted now, thanks!

It costs more for longer chains where I buy them online here, best to get one the right length or as little too long as possible, not to mention waste.

The extra links make nice key rings for the man who has everything.
Makes a change from socks and ties.
