Had the rare oppurtunity to be invited to a track day at Circuit Chambley near Metz/France and the classic hillclimb in Küssnacht/Switzerland on subsequent weekends. In both cases the person that had inscribed was prevented from participating through health issues. Many thanks and a full recovery to both Christian and Jürgen!
Chambley came at short notice so the 3C was dusted off, oil and tyres checked and away we went. Nice 3.3km circuit, good surface with a challenging layout, especially if you're trying to keep up with moderns with a 100hp advantage (next to the other goodies they offer). No timing offered, but by the end of the day my runs were becoming a lot smoother and consistant. Quickly got used to being overtaken, front BT45 suffered badly. My mate Wolfgang had a ball on his Morini Corsaro 1200. Weather wasn't inthe best mood, 1st turn was cancelled due to heavy fog, limiting view to about 25m. Last turn of the day was washed out...
Jürgen had entered the hillclimb ( Küssnacht-Seebodenalp, 5.09km/545m elevation difference) with his Aermacchi Ala d'oro 350, so that was my tool. I was rather intimidated by the idea of blasting up an unknown mountain road on borrowed machinery, but it was far more relaxing than I imagined. Bike ran like clockwork, road surface was renewed only a few weeks prior, smooth as a billiard table! 4 runs in total, my timed runs improved by 8 seconds each time. Pity it was a regularity event, 8 seconds difference threw me back to #162 overall, but I did manage 11th in my class. Mate Michael did a lot better on his 500 Barcelona replica, 6th in class and 29th overall (best non-swiss rider in fact). In all, great fun, great, well-organised event. Had a chat with Piero and Fernando, they seemed to enjoy the weekend as well. Hot and sunny, standing on hold for almost an hour at the start was a challenge in itself. After racing had ended, the skies unloaded, with hail followed by heavy rain. All over after 30 minutes, but the entire paddock was rather soggy...
