Charging issues

Morning all..

My Mirage isn't charging and probably hasn't been for a while. Given I may not have access to my usual retinue of Lav triple pushers on the way over to Bellingen I thought I'd best look into it before I set off...

12.35v across the battery with engine running (at all revs) and engine off. Wanted to check the regulator/rectifier before pulling the stator etc out: not sure how to check it so figured to do it by substitution with another unit, however, our local wreckers tell me it's unlikely to be the rectifier as they only kick in at about 13.5 or so volts to prevent over voltage, i.e. if the voltage strays towards the upper 14s and above then it's the regulator/rectifier unit. Is that what others have found?

Which wires do I check to see if it's the stator? Yellow?

As Vince indicates AndyW, the later stages of "Weird" topic will be the check of charging system with motor running, AC and DC voltage measurements, if you can get to all the wires on the RR will take 10 minutes or less and indicate most probable cause of the under volts. Marty has a good tip, though the 12,35V is even a bit low for a missing phase, depends on voltage measuring device. Also if an open circuit yellow wire you can check at the RR yellow wires, as a DC resistance value close to zero ohms, once again Rob has all the numbers in the topic mentioned. HTH j
 
Ok, am back in from the shed: thanks for these replies and advice.. Will look at the later stages of the Weird topic presently.

In a side-of-the-road manner I've determined the fault to be in the regulator somewhere so will go find a replacement tomorrow AM (and then start on rewelding my rack...). With the bike running the voltage across the yellow and yellow/black wires was ~30vAC (not much but then it is an original series 1 system [80W tops]..) then i briefly flashed the wires together to produce a spark so the alternator is indeed producing power. regulator measures 12.35v (engine off) across the red and earth wires so is powered up ok: it's stuffed..
 
I thought that all Series 1, 180°s, like mine, originally had only a rectifier, no regulator. unless someone has fitted a reg. later, you don't have one.
If you have the (incandescent) headlight on the battery only starts charging above about 4,000 RPM.
I'd suggest checking all connections are clean and putting the battery on a charger and seeing if it gets above 12.8 volts, if not the battery may be past its best.

Rectifiers work at all voltages, unless they're donald ducked. I think he's attempting to describe a regulator.

Didn’t know about the 4000rpm threshold tho which explains why they never charge too well on the road as that, in top gear at least, is pretty much licence losing territory over here. I think I blipped it to +4K and saw no reaction on the multimeter…
 
Gee talk about missing the obvious ( what to ask ), a genuine factory Bosch anti battery charging system retained on the "all original" Mirage, legend as we call you... next obvious, is it HKZ or the notorious BTZ? Other lads have made good points on what to engage upon, and indeed early ( would not think Mirage "early" ) had no "regulator" as we know them these days. j.
