Hi all. If one were to get nuts, fittings etc chromed, would they still fit onto the original thread? Also, where can i get the original chrome engine bolts from? Thank you.

Bugger, are they zinc. I'm talking about the bolts on the casings, IE, primary drive case etc. They look jolly shiny to me, maybe they were an aftermarket item??

hi Mark

have you considered changing them for stainless, should be pretty easy and cheaper than getting them recromed. I would have thought that someone suppied s kit.

Mark,

The 1200s had smoothed off chromed hex bolts over the entire bike.  Looks lovely, a real nice finishing touch.  Dare say you won't find much NOS any more.  All others used cadmium or zinc plating on the bolts.

There's a very nice 1200 for sale in Boston on this forum, with 3cl bars, rearsets and chromed bolts. Buy it, snag the bits you want, then post it on eBay Australia. Keep an Australian happy, you get what you need and make some money, the poor guy in Boston who's selling his is the only one who loses. But do it now before Red starts to sell his collection, Laverdas will start to be as common as Hondas in Australia pretty soon :D.
And sorry Mike, I don't mean to make you feel bad. I wish I could buy your bike, it looks great and sounds thoroughly sorted. Make sure you sell it for what it's worth. I'd hate to see it become "property of an anonymous collector" but you have to do what you have to do.

Get yourself down to an industrial fasteners place, there's bound to be one near where you live, and they'll have more sizes than you can shake a stick at.  If they don't stock chromed bolts they'll certainly be able to get them fairly easily.  Personally, I'd use stainless, it will polish up just as well as chrome and stay like it.  Having said that, I've got a scattering of silver plated and titanium on mine (proper ones aerospace ones, not the kit rubbish) - shame I don't work in the industry anymore...

Actually no real problem chroming bolts, They wire them together with copper wire like Christmas tree lights and push the threads into plastic tubes. The only bit chromed is the portion out of the plastic. And it isn't all that expensive.

Chrome bolts are fine untill you put a spanner on them and all the chrome pings off again. I once built a Harley shovelhead for a lesbian WPC, where are you now Tammy?  Who insisted on gold plated fasteners, tissue paper on the spanners and nothing could be done up tight.... waste of time and money. Laverda factory chromed bolts have a nice thin flash of chrome on them, never found anyone who can reliably replicate that, they allways come out too thick and the polishing messes up the hex. Best with polished stainless if you want shiney.

Ralph Allen at Motalia does stainless bolts that are a work of art, no kidding.
Not cheap but they are head and shoulders above kit fasteners.

My 1978 1200 had chrome bolts as standard, and the 3C I have now has some, which look like standard fitment too, but hard to tell these days.
As Keith says, the chrome just chips off when spannering them.

I had mine done on the project formula mirage . That were done with the other parts that needed chrome. As they strip of the old chrome first there is no problem with the threads.it seems only the early 1200s had the polished hex heads the later ones were simply standard bolts chromed with the markings intact. The only difference to the other parts was that they were not polished but left as a bright Chrome finish instead.
