Club Laverda NSW Brass Monkey run 29-30th May

Consider yourselves lucky to be allowed out at all - we're about to go back into lockdown here in Melbourne (or Vic as a whole). Weekend down in Wakerville cancelled. Thanks to the fabulous hotel quarantine system our brilliant leaders have seen fit to employ. A window of opportunity about a kilometre wide in terms of time to build a proper facility just went down the gurgler. And of course millions have delayed vaccination because 'there was no urgency'. Fuck me. The Feds are fukken useless.

Ah, lockdown fail was in South Oz Quentin I believe.. but still a shite result for you lot.. we are off to NSW this weekend.. hopefully we Qlders will be allowed home.. :sneaky:

Feel sorry for the Vics continuing to cop the hits:(
Only silver lining might be to get some (all around the country) to rethink their opposition to vaccines......
(Have to laugh at the political argie bargie in all of this. Spending hundreds of millions for a "silver bullet" when you will have the same idiots running the show and a whole new set of logistics!!?? Hmmmm........)

My first thought months ago, all high rise Hotels have centralised connected AC including the rooms and all public areas also including the hallways were the security hangs about. Separate smaller self contained building like there using NOW would have been much safer.

Put a few dongas on
NSW: Cockatoo Island
SA: Kangaroo Island
NT: Melville Island
Victoria and Tas: King Island
WA: Rottnest Island
that'll do em.

Oh and for us poor Queenslanders: We get Hamilton Island.... no dongas required.

Seems fair to me.

Quite right Vince. Hotel quarantine isn't effective at quarantining the guests from each other or the hotel staff. Nor would anybody with any common sense expect them to be. They're not designed for that purpose. The problem is that our politicians don't seem to have a lot of common sense.

I used to design aircon systems for multi-story buildings. Most of the air is recirculated through the central air conditioning plant, with only a small amount of fresh air (typically around 10%) added for ventilation. The air is filtered before being recirculated, but the filter media for normal applications like hotels and offices isn't fine enough to remove airborne viruses or bacteria. For that you need HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filters like they use in hospitals.

For quarantine purposes they'd be better off using buildings with opening windows and no aircon. But hotel aircon systems could be made way more effective at quarantine with little more than the flick of a switch. Most central HVAC systems are designed with the outside air intake variable from the minimum required for ventilation up to 100%. If they set it on a fixed 100% outside air then all of the contaminated air would be exhausted with zero recirculation. The only down side would be higher running costs and some drift in the temperature inside the rooms because the system has to cool (or heat) more hot (or cold) air coming in from outside.

Classic case study is Leganases Disease, started in AC cooling towers. It took years to identify what was its cause.

All the state governments know that but it seems the federal government didn't receive the memo.

Seems the Sydney Ducati club are meeting the Queensland club at Walca tonight and Gloster tomorrow night. Is there enough room for all 4 clubs around there.

Yeah, Legionnaires disease first appeared in 1976, when hundreds of delegates at a meeting of the American Legion at a hotel in Philadelphia got sick and a bunch of them died. The cause was eventually traced to the hotel's cooling tower which had a bacterial bloom and aerosol droplets of contaminated water were getting sucked into the aircon intake. The actual strain of bacteria is nothing new. It's been around forever in soil, but the warm, wet environment in cooling towers is a perfect breeding environment. If you set out to invent a system to breed and distribute bacteria, you couldn't do much better than a cooling tower.

It was a big topic when I first started in mechanical building services design. We had to be familiar with its causes and how to prevent it happening, and also to minimise the risk if the cooling towers do get a bacterial bloom. I was forever sending samples of cooling tower water off for pathological tests.

BTW, it's not just cooling towers. The bacteria can bloom in domestic hot water storage cylinders and you breathe in aerosol droplets while you have a shower. It's important to to keep the water temperature above 60°C which is sufficient to kill the bacteria. I remember a few years ago reading an article in an "alternative energy" publication about ways to reduce electricity consumption in the home. It made the recommendation that home owners set their hot water thermostats to 45-50C to minimise heat loss from the cylinder. Definitely not a good idea if you want to stay healthy.

When our water heater was replaced a couple of years ago the plumber told us it was legally restricted to a maximum of 50C. I am guessing this is to prevent people from accidentally scalding themselves. The policy may achieve that aim but now I have to boil a pot of water on the stove when washing up. The nanny state in action methinks.

cheers,

I installed a instant gas water heater and had it preset to 60° before delivery no worries. All the heaters available are set at 50
Sure Hooksie can explain.
