Clutch springs ?

Hi all, I'm "refreshing" my 82TS partly for therapy and partly because it needs it!
Has anyone had problems with after market clutch springs being too strong? Clutch is really heavy after reassembly with the new springs - bearing in mind the following;
Ive had bike from new, I know how they normally are!
Ive tried clutch without plates, the same so not them sticking or binding on the drums.
I threw the old springs away before my illness so can't put them back!
Thanks in anticipation

Because slipping clutches are often blamed on inadequate springs, repro springs have often been commisioned to far too firm specs. Yes, the 750SFC had stronger springs, but they really aren't necessary for normal road work and are too heavy even for the triples.

Maybe a little less pre-load might mitigate your problem a bit. The factory fitted small washers inside the springs, under the bolt head for a while. Part# 33 111 121, 6.25 x 11 x 3mm, fitted to Jota 120 for example as standard.

Main cause of clutch slippage/drag are bent/warped plain plates, worn/contaminated lined plates, worn hub and/or basket splines and to a far lesser degree, tired springs.

Thanks for the quick reply . I had replaced plates to cure slipping (high mileage wear) & the springs as per green book. Should have kept old springs;. Are you suggesting thinner washers between bolt & spring to reduce preload?

Thinner washers under the bolt head will not alter anything. You need to "extend" the spring pillars and thus the working length of the spring. The factory placed a 3mm thick washer that fitted INSIDE the spring under the bolt heads. This would have reduced preload by 3mm, which is quite substantial in this case.

Of course I was a bit slow there, makes sense now. As mine is srs2 its probably same clutch as a 120. I will make up some suitable spacers. Thanks again.

I had a set of new springs from a well known dealer in Eastern UK and they were much too heavy, I couldnt even get the bolts started, never mind adding washers to reduce preload, the one that I did get started on applying half a turn and then regripping the tool, it ripped out one thread, they went back and I was refunded, the clutch plate pack looked like it had been in stock for decades, dust a grime plus deformed shrink pack etc, and even though I stated that I had a series 11 clutch (whch has an extra plate), I got the set for series1 and was one plate short, I asked for another plate and was told "I will have to break open a pack just for one plate" well so be it, thats the way to get the full kit for later models if you only had stock for the earlier ones!, I used the thickest of the old plates which in reality didnt need to be changed anyway, I have found that about three sets of (factory, when they were available) spring go to one set of plates.

pattern spring have been casuing me grief lately firstly the clutch springs and then laterly the gear shift spring, lots of rubbish out there which I found to my disliking, the last one fitted worked OK, for about 600 miles and became so weak as to be relatively inop, I was helped out by a good mate who sent me a spring from foreign parts, made their and used their without problems, bingo, its in and seems good, riding will tell, but just by hand it seems much stronger than I have had for a few years.

My springs also came from that area although not that bad, they fit on ok.John Deere part perhaps?
Anyone recommend a supplier of a near stock set?
Thanks

I can supply pattern springs, been fitting them to all models for a couple of years without issues. Free length 47mm, wire diametre 2.4mm with 7 coils.

PM me if interested.
