Hi
I have just been dismantling the clutch on my jota, and got the last circlip off.
But the clutch (basket) is reluctant to pull off!!
What options do i have to get it off?

                                    THANKS RUSS.

Hi, Russ.

If the cover plate for the rubbers is bolted on (instead of riveted) you
can do as follows:
unscrew two opposite bolts
make yourself a simple bar with 6,5mm holes corresponding to the distance of the unscrewed bolts
lay the center of the bar across the shaft end
screw 2 long 6mm bolts (or threaded rods) through the holes in the bar into the empty threaded
holes in the basket
use counterscrews and tighten them evenly side for side against the bar
won't need much force to pull the basket free
Sorry, no pic, but the whole thing will look quite similar to a 2-arm puller

hth, Ernesto

Russ,

If it still connected, pull the clutch lever, this might free off the plates enough to let you jiggle the basket off them.

The internal splines are probably worn to a point that the plates hook up and are no longer in line with each other, effectively jamming the basket.

Russ,

You mean the clutch hub!

For me at least, the basket is the bit that goes over the whole plot... :D

The hub can be stubborn to remove.  Use Ernestos' description of rigging up a puller and use a heat gun to heat the hub centre while applying gentle pressure via the puller.

A puller plate with 6 holes to connect to the spring posts would be safer than a simple cross bar, the hub is quite delicate and can distort if pressure is applied at only 2 points.

Hi Russ - this is the sort of tool you need - the factory mechanics left it for us when they came to repair the dodgy cranks in England - fits 750 and triple!! - regards - Phil

...and don't forget to use the sparklers in the background for the moment of celebration when you get it out safely and in one piece. If not, drop one gently into the almost empty tank. Just to get rid of the frustration...

:D

Phil: love these kind of very practical tools! Made as our bikes are: maybe not the most beautiful ones, but doing their job perfectly!  ;)

Just for you Lothar - Here's another tool that the factory guys left for us - it's made from the wire wheel rear wheel spanner and the spacer welded to it locks against the factory crank locking tool - very useful and looks so evil as well!! - Regards - Phil
