I used to have a Mamod stationary engine ........ I understand they were still being made , but in China .... ( where else ? ) ....... but with some sort of solid fuel lighter , which has now been banned ?
With mine , you`d fill the burner tray with meths , and light it up with a match ...... and then stare at it for about five minutes as the pressure built up ..... and steam and water started to dribble out of the pressure relief valve ....... give the flywheel a nudge or two...... and we have the bursting into life...... accompanied by puffs of steam , connecting rods thrashing back and forth , and various sucking and hissing noises ..........
I always fancied the steam roller version , but never got around to having one of those .
..... minature diesel aero engines ...... jet canister propelled boats ...... model steam engines ......... tell that to the kids nowadays , and they just wouldn`t understand .........
