With 35k miles on the clocks everything checking out as low wear good condition, just a 3mm thick black sludge in the bottom crankcase no metal shavings or hard bits.....do you guys think it's worth it having the crank split to clean the slingers?

why did you dissasemble?
It's been unused for twenty years all the other parts of the bike are being restored so while the engine was out, it was no big deal to dismantle it to make sure an engine problem wasn't why it was left. I didn't want a catastrophic engine failure to happen, parts are expensive and scarce

Front plastic cam chain guide looks well heat effected, good move to replace it. Like your logic, our safety is number one, and other road users.

Whom is able to supply quality gasket sets or parts of same, these days? Anyone?

May your rebuild be all and more...j

I got my gasket set from Phil Todd as I'm in the UK, he's got a good name as you will well know .
For the head gasket I'm going to ask Keith to supply his one, the one he does imho is the best for sealing oil weeps from the joint.

Thanks for the good wishes and the tip on the front cam chain guide 😉

Famous Laverda saying while I was in there xxx. I love spending other people's money. Man, you are in a tricky spot, deciding between low miles and ok or doing THE LOT. That's bloody hard.

Hmm...it's not cheap, so depends on your intentions for the bike, but I had my crank done by Keith, slingers were close to full! Also had rods replaced..turns out they were bent...Keith has had Arrow rods made for these bikes. And ask Keith to show you head gasket failures...he has a bespoke solution, newly designed, does away with O rings, correct flame ring etc. you are lucky to be close..it's a schlepp from Kent up on the train, bike transported, ridden back over 2 days. Mind you, I discovered the beauty of the Borders!

I'm aiming for a triple that I can do seven years/twelve thousand miles or so and enjoy doing them without enduring major grief in the engine department. It's going to be sold about then as age will have kicked in, so I'm not in the mindset that I will spend a trailer full of cash for everything under the sun and it will be all milk and roses love for ever 😉
I've been talking to Keith for eighteen months on and off, a couple of other marque restorations interceded, and I've formed the opinion he's a good honest guy who won't hard sell me into paying for unnecessary jobs which don't meet my intentions . So I'm really looking forward to dropping my parts off next week and I'll think carefully about it , Vince and Nick7 😁👍

I'm not expecting it to be cheap, Nick . I don't mind paying an expert for his expertise...full marks to you for going to those lengths to get your Laverda sorted , hope you're going to get the use and enjoy it

Personally Hubert, I think you are wasting your money but I am a cheapskate. I did a 1200TS engine in a far worse state than yours. spent very little on it and had Maurice Turner torture the bike on the way to Breganze in blistering heat. Yours will never get the beating that motor had and it ran like a train. Keith will always find something wrong because he's a perfectionist.

Pat

I know what you're saying but time for biking is running by and I want to ride it for a good long while. The crank turned out good, he's going to get it up to his standards for being true, the heads getting new oversized stem valves and smaller exhaust valves with UL seats. Cam towers mating surface on the head machined and new billet cam towers, cracks welded and machined. Original bores and pistons ok for wear but ring grooves worn so will be machined oversized to take thicker rings. Vapour blast and rebuild..
I'd intended to build up the engine myself but he said he could put it together for me and use his know how in doing it...the gear clusters are good, bearings etc. And he'd build up the clutch which I understand can be problematic to the uninitiated with the plate springs. He's also going to slot the cam sprockets and dial in the cams.

I just need to zinc plate the engine fasteners, polish up the covers and send them up with the other engine odds and ends , Witt trigger, or coils etc..

Hopefully the bike on the road by early autumn 🍁
