Crankshaft mark

I have an Sf that does not have a mark on the Crankshaft to line up w/ the Oil pump gear mark. I read Parkers Green book where he writes some do not have a mark on the Crank. You have to mark it before disassembly. Is there any way to line up Crank w/ Oil pump gear if it has been disassembled? Then how would they have lined it up in Breganze when it was manufactured back in 1972??? Evan

Is that 12 o'clock midday or midnight when you put the key on the oil pump? I suppose if you miss the deadline you'll have to wait at least 12 hours to try again.

Feeling a bit tetchy today Cam?

Not at all. I just prefer not to take anything seriously. If there's more than one way to interpret a statement, I'll go for the wrong one just for the sake of amusement. It's a kind of Spike Milligan way of looking at the world. I'm probably the only person amused by it though.  ::)

I find Cam amusing ....... although, knowing he is sober when he writes his comments is a bit of a concern.

Frankly, I was wondering what o?clock the key position would be if the crank was BDC ...... it fried my brain, so forgot about it ....... bugger, it just came back. :P

Half crank speed, Chris - farken work it out! I'll give yer a clue - BDC is 180 deg out from TDC  8) 8) 8) 8)

As for Cam's welcome humour ... well, cams are innately eccentric, but they have a circular kinda way of operating ... from lifting valves or moods to opening up  wackily complicated engineering discussions.  Pretty hard to hold a cam down once they take a turn  :-*

I?m doing exactly the same job, I do have the crankshaft dot, I?ve fitted the sprocket on the crankshaft lining the dots up, I?ve lined the dot on the crankshaft sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump sprocket and the woodruff key is at 12 o?clock. (Nearer the midnight one than the noon one as I?ve literally just done it!)  but it?s not at TDC! How come?

How far off TDC? Piet?s post is what it should be. Anything else and you?ll have trouble setting your ignition timing if it uses a slotted backing plate like the points do.

Could the pump end of the crank has been pressed in the wrong position, hence the dot is not in the right degree. What would I know, I?m a salesman.

My keyway sits at a nadger after vertical (clockwise  :) ) when my SF0 is setup properly.

Maybe 12:30 or 00:30 in Camworld?  1 tooth's worth.

No dots on the crank... should be an "O" on both crank and gear that need to align.  The gears align per arrows, the dot on the oil pump gear is then at 12 o'clock (or as close as you can get it.  Often somewhere between 12 o'clock and five past).  If you have dots, most probably added by a DPO...

Taking gears from other engines can cause mix-ups, the crank splines are random, later cranks did not have the keyway that is usually marked with an "O".  So the "Os" don't neccessarily line up when all is correct.  If no keyway present, look in the "base" of the splines.

Also note that the drive gear on the crank is calibrated, the number stamped on it denotes the size.  If these gears are not paired correctly, one helluva strange noise results.
