Chris,
No bother, lots of people get me confused with a.n.other, or i'm just generally confused, but thankyou anyway for the info, if i ever move to OZ (i.e get divorced) it will come in very handy.

Strange how things go, just applied for a couple of jobs in oz.

:D :D :D :D Your avatar suggests you are not slow Lothar !

yeah - interesting what you can do with Photoshop...  8)

Honestly: 19 seconds behind you - per round in SPA (assuming the Video with the 3:03 was yours...). that was on my fastest lap with 3:22 :-[ ...

An obvious question maybe, but with the alternator removed the battery provides sufficient power to start and run the bike for your track sessions. Does it need to be swapped out during a days use?

Scrumpy,

The ignition is total loss, runs off a quite small gel battery, about 9Ah iIrc, will last about an hour of track time.  The starter is fitted but that is powered by a remote battery.  I do mange to bump start it if neccessary, takes my breath though, the first 2 laps are rubbish after doing that.

The altered alternator cover is actually the one fitted to the TT-F1 racer Moto Witt campaigned in the late 80s..... the rider Werner K?rper managed to grind through the lower frame rails..... :o  before Michael St?cker managed to chuck it under the armco at a hill-climb in Schauinsland/Southern Germany in 1988(?).

What series /class do you enter it in?

Bob,

The bike was to be raced in a series initiated by Art Motor here in Germany.  Unfortunately, rules were changed slightly once it was finished and it was no longer eligible in this form, and I did not want to change it as the rule change wasn't exactly to my liking.  A sudden lack of funds ruled out any competition outings anyway.... bummer!  I do hope to take it out in anger a couple of times next year, the german Vintage Association (VfV) has introduced a new class in which the bike can be entered!

Just one question..........Why did you detune a race bike by rephasing from 120 to 180 ?

Matt,

The bike was built to existing regulations expressing a 1980 cut-off date, neither the 120? engine nor the later stiffer frame were available at that time.  Decided to cheat a bit and at least take advantage of the better/stronger later gearbox..... besides, the 120? donk had been under the work bench long enough!

It's actually in a quite high state of tune, hi-comp Assos, BIG inlet valves, 36mm carbs (period round-slide carbs dictated), C7 cams, a nicely flowed head, DMC II ignition, fat headers and because the noise limit is quite generous, a works megga that actually works with the cams.  Still 980cc and making around 98 ponies..... leaves a little scope for things to come.

I would have preferred to leave it at the 120? configuration as it would be a bit easier to extract a bit more power, but, rules are rules.

Lothar,

I always enter 2 bikes at Spa, the racer as well as my 3C, and ride them as I see fit :D.  Sometimes Willi takes a spin, sometimes I take one of his twins for a ride.

Although I feel much more at home on my 3C, I'm no faster on it, despite the better brakes.  Probably the weight advantage of the racer coming in to the equation.

Piet, what new class has the VfV come up with? Is it "real" racing or one of these keep the same lap time things? Not that it matters that much, I'm perfectly happy to go out and make loud noises...

Tom

Tom,

It is unfortunately a "constancy" class, as always with the VfV......... but you can try to ride fast constantly! :D  Besides, the missus won't allow me to do "real" racing.... I frightened her once during a "real" race and had to promise her I'd never do that again!

Meant for all the big bangers from the 70s and 80s, allows fork stancions up to 42mm and a maximum of 4 braking pistons/wheel.  So either 2 x 2-pots or 1 x 4-pot caliper.  No mono suspension or wheels smaller than 18" unless stock at the time the bike was introduced.
Mainly european bikes entered up to now, probably be only a matter of months till the jap boys catch on.

Piet I saw the VfV has a Clubsport/1978 class which would be perfect for the Spaceframe. If you only have to ride consistantly then it doesn't really matter too much which class you play in as long as you can stay in the 70% of the winner's time. I'm just wondering how big the speed difference is with people trying to be consistently, er, consistent verses people trying to consistently go fast. Sounds like fun though.
