Cylinder Liners

OK, if I can gather a 3C batch together, we can get some made at a reasonable price. I will be happy to do drawings and the leg work.

The type will be 981cc, with spigots. Bore will be ?74.25 - giving some meat for final boring and honing to size.

If other types are needed, then I can do those also, but will need a dead liner to measure up.

Anyone interested should PM me on 'laverda at groovefirst.com'

Price will be approx 46 to 50 GBP each (Incl GB VAT but excl P&P) dependant on batch size. Please only request in sets of 3, I dont want to be left with odd liners if anyone drops out.

Leadtime is ca 5 weeks (4 weeks for manufacture and 1 week for payment and posting on).

If anyone has any experience/advice of what tol should be applied to the outside (82 nominal) diameter, that would be useful.

Cheers,

Paul H

Phil - thanks for the bore advice. I bet they had fun with those solid liners! At the last they will have had a happy scrap merchant.

(Please note it is not my intention to take business away from Laverda suppliers. If it were not for the fact that I need liners but am seriously broke, then I would not be bothering - support your fave supplier whenever you can - we need those guys).

Hi Paul - Here's an old diagram I used when getting liners made - Don't forget that the 120 degreeliner is shorter than the 180 item - HTH - Phil`

Question.
If the 180 liners are longer than the 120
can you use 120 liners in the 180 motors?
I assume they would not touch the proud on the cases
any other issues?

Hi Jota2
No problems using the shorter liner in 180 - I think the 120 cases are bored to same depth as 180's - may be wrong as it was a long time ago since i looked into this. The bottom of liner does not actually use the "proud" on cases for support. I was told that the 120 had the shorter liners to allow more oil fling to the unbushed small end - Regards - Phil

Thanks Phil, you drawing is very useful as it confirms all the measurements I have taken. Thanks for taking the time to post that.

The 120 length is interesting - as I'm not a fan of carrying around extra weight for no good reason (no belly jokes you lot). I can see from the wear marks on my 180 liners that the 'proud' could already be shortened by 3mm before the piston skirt (the thrust face extention) sees fresh air, beyond the liner chamfer at BDC.

Disadvantages of shorter liners?

Can anyone confirm a 120 liner length?

Cheers, Paul H

Paul,
I've just nipped out to the garage to measure a liner I bought new from Andy Wagner.  It has ( CCS ) stamped on the outside whch is the same marking I have found on original liners I've removed from blocks, so I guessed its an official Laverda part.
It is much shorter than the other liners I have so I presumed it's a 120 item.

The length from the bottom of the flange ring to the bottom of the liner is 125mm  Overall length including spigot is about 132mm.

I had assumed that the shorter liners were an attempt to get more oil onto the little ends (my own Jota had spun a little end bush due to oil starvation at sustained high speeds - before I got it!!) and Phil's opinion seals it for me.  I understand the little end bushes were not fitted to 120s, and perhaps the lower edge of the pistons didn't have the extensions to front and rear that the earlier pistons had? I would be intrested to know if the 120 pistons commonly have the crusty black burned oil deposits on the underside of pistons that I've seen on my 180 engines, or whether the increased oil flow kept them cooler as planned.

I've replied to your email thanks  but I can't tell if my reply actually left my rusty computer.  Yell if you don't get it!

Chris

Hi Chris, thank you for the measurements. This matches info from other sources, so I think we are definate on that.

I did not get your email. Please try PM-ing me within Laverdapedia, and we can sort things out.

I agree about the black deposits on the underside of 180 pistons - but have never ownwed a 120, so cannot comment if that happens on them also or to what degree.

Cheers, Paul

Just talked to a nice woman at LA Sleeve.  She's been there for 25 plus years, knows what a Jota is and sold me a time share as well as a new sleeve.  I think I'm in love...

I just bought an extremely expensive pair of running shoes from a drop dead gorgeous dutch backpacker, smart shop for employing hot women

No just sitting here waiting patently for the topend job to be done,my brand new shoes are now stuffed,I spent the morning sitting in a puddle angle grinding groves for flashing, white shoes are now "go fast" RED,brick dust.BTW that Dutch backpacker was a Blondie bomb shell, close to 6 foot and absolutely gorgeous with a very amusing ascent.

Ascent? :D I`m sure it's a typo Vince but given that she's 6' tall perhaps not.... I`m sure I could keep myself amused ascending that

Hey Vince,

You didn`t get any photographic evidence of this 6` blonde by any chance, did you?
Do you feel like going back for another pair of " shoes " ???

Ciao,

Ross.

Here's a photo my favorite kind of tall, cool Blonde....

Just reading through this topic, did the "Haggis" eventually get some liners made, of so I would like to purchase 3 any contact details available.

John

Hi John - busy just now, will get back to you/this thread later tonight - yes did get some liners made successfully. Paul H

John,
Wolfgang has new liners in stock, as would a few other dealers.

I have 12 custom liners being made at LA Liners in USA and was going to get some standard units done as well.

Plenty around.
