Dell’Orto floats

I’ve had all three Dell’Orto 8.5 gram replacement floats fail in all three carburettors. It looks to me that the machine making these floats needed to be calibrated as the two parts of the plastic float were not aligned properly during the bonding process and subsequently failed along the weld. The floats that I have purchased subsequently seem to be aligned correctly so hopefully they don’t fail. My question is has anybody else encountered these types of problems with the replacement floats for the phf carbs.
cheers Dave.

I have seen white floats with the spindle boss too wide for the carbs, makes them stick, and the black ones don't seem (in my case) affected by ethanol, unlike the black tipped float valves.

I think 8.5 grams is the right weight for the float when dealing with the replacement floats that are available nowadays. Please correct me if I’m wrong. Clem I have also had to file the spindle boss on all my floats multiple times maybe because of the ethanol to prevent them from sticking. In fact I Think it may have been you that suggested that course of action. Cheers Dave.

Floats are available in 8.5, 10.5 and 14 g.
The lighter the float, the more it'll be affected by vibration I imagine.

Ah sounds feasible Paul. I’ve seen the different weighted floats you have listed. I just replaced mine with floats of the same weight. My triple seems to run great after fixing an over fuelling issue Which was caused by the floats sticking and two of them filling up with fuel from not having the two halfs aligned properly whilst being plastic welded together. Thus making the carburettors spew fuel out the vents.

A lighter than stock float will cause lean running if float height or jet sizes are not adjusted accordingly. It's not much, but does make itself felt. I've had to retro-fit stock floats to carbs that were "over-serviced" with the lighter items.

I've yet to find a broken/unservicable stock 10gr float, seems they are almost indestructable. Unless you step on it...
