Dellorto Float Levels - using a clear hose

I set up float levels on a Suzuki Bandit the other day using calipers and got them spot on as per the workshop manual specs. When I put clear hoses on the carbs to check, the variance was up to 5mm. NFG.

Next time I do the 36mm Dellortos on my 3CL, I'm going to make up hose adaptors and check. What I need to know is where the fuel should come up to in the hose in reference to the carby, and is that with the carbs straight up and down, or tilted at the same angle as they are fitted to the engine?

Advice would be appreciated!

Regards, Greg

Have seen clear float bowls on poncy ducrappis in the past but have only ever set them upside down with a ruler. Interesting project. Dells hold heaps more fuel than the Japanese carbies

There used to be clear float bowls for Dellorto carbs, but they soon turned yellow and hard to see through.

I suggest you may be overthinking things again? no? (dunno)

However, if it helps, I do have one Malossi? transparent bowl to suit the PHF.

Yes, beer is mandatory.

I replace my Del float bowls with some from a Mikuni. Replaced the rest at the same time  :D

Hi Greg, I did the clear hose trick on my triple Dellos once, see here: http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,97048.msg389202.html#msg389202

After I had adjusted the float levels exactly as described in the Delorto manual (using a gauge like shown here http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,97003.msg391101.html#msg391101), I found the level in the clear hose being right at the joint line between float bowl and carb body, with the carb sitting vertical.

Hope that helps.
All the best,
Stefan

Take the clear hose and connect it to the fuel input, then blow into it when the carb is upside down and you have the ruler in your hand.  ;)

Appreciated Mark, but I'll give the hose system a run. Clear bowls.Hmmm. Sort of like drinking a stubby with no coaster. On hand one can see how much left, on the other, not quite as cold... ;)

Eventually, the Mik float levels will be also required to be checked/adjusted.  They're not set forever... just as those carbs won't last forever either!

Don't see the point of all this.  As long as the float level is set to the specified height, the floats are in good order and of the same (correct) weight, AND the float valves do their job properly, all will be OK.  The actual fuel level constantly changes on the move, acceleration, deccelleration and lean angles all throw it out of whack, not to mention the engine vibes.
