Hello,
Newbie to the site so hi to all.

I have a 1974 750 SF2 tht is fitted with PHF36A carbs.
These are in very bad condition and I was wondering if I should replace with new if possible.

I see PHF 36D's and D1's availale but no mention of A's.

Whats the difference in these carbs, and can I fit the D's or D1's?

Any help appreciated.

You sure of the D1? Be aware that new instruments have a male coupling so need a rubber sleeve to the inlet stub on the head. And a bit of fiddling.

There are plenty of spares for those carbs, they have to be really bad so they are un restorable… I would first try it!
If you still don’t restore them… send me some photos! 😋😋

The problem is that eventually the bodies wear after a few sets of new slides. Old Amals can be sleeved but doesn't seem to be current practice with Dell'Orto.

Thanks for your help everyone,
The bike was running fine on these carbs they just look terrible.!
Rusty nuts and very dirty.
Maybe a sonic? clean is a better bet and some new parts to make them look better.
Any recommendations for parts on these? I found Eorocarb?

Hiya Nolacus
Best guy in the UK for Dellorto parts is Ducatipaddy (just google it). Very knowledgeable, helpful and reasonable. He offers a complete refurb service and they'll come back like new, considerably cheaper than new units. If you join ILOC you'll get a discount. Where in Coventry are you, I'm in Poets Corner?

Kind Regards Bob

Hi Bob,
I'm on Bennetts Road South
Just stripping the bike down for a full refurb she's been neglected for some time.
I've found Ducati Paddy's site thanks

So you have good carbs but they're dirty.
Clean them. An ultra sonic bath will cost you less than a pair of carbs.
Change the slides and the brassware and you're away for tens of thousands of miles.

Thanks Paul, the advice above from everyone is fab, i'm going to source the parts and refurb them as all suggest.
I'll look into n ultra sonic bath too. Where to start on that one?

Completely apart, ultrasonic bath, microglass blasting, blow it with air gun literally through every hole, hot water and again air gun through everyhole.
Buy new gaskets/o-rings and rusty screws (or replate them), clean the jets with those thin “swords” as we say in Spain. (“Escariadores, reamers?)”
They will look better than new😏 total around 150/200€, 50€ if you blast them and ultrasonic yourself. I invested in both machines, best investment.

I totally recommend Ducati Paddy also! Actually i buy most of my Brembo and Dellorto parts to him! I don’t know how it will be now after Brexit…?

And that is for sure… my worthwhile is totally personal benefit as I don’t make any money, i use it also for other purposes like cleaning calipers before Cerakoting for example, as the blasting equipment. Sometimes the fact of doing it myself is already satisfying enough to make it worthwhile. Economically is a different story, but I don’t live from it.
Another good use of those things is that you don’t need to send parts here and there saving time and risk that something get lost (not from Paddy) but in the post or in the mesh of the local shop doing the cleaning or blasting…🥺
But that is all of course very personal.

Regards,
Miguel

I bought a very good ultrasound machine for less that A$200. Don't use it often but don't need to rely on outsourcing and the often long delays.

As a training exercise when I did a hobbyist machining course i rebored my worn out 36 Dells and made OS bronze slides, had them hard chromed and ground them myself (same hobby machining course). Worked a treat. Slides and carbs should never wear but does mean trying different cutaways isn't that easy! I started making replaceable cutaway inserts for them but have other pressing things to work on so that will have to wait!
