Delorto carb needle

I removed the tops of my carbs from my 1200 engine with a view to lower the carb needles by one notch (from middle to top groove)

On inspection (needed magnifying glass) two were labelled K1 and one was labelled K01. Minor detail but it left me with the feeling they werent a 'matched set'. (like many other things on this engine). Should that be any issue?

Also I recall talk of K14 needles. Whats the difference?

1200 engine with PHF32's bored to 36. 4C cams, 10:1, 40mm exhaust system, large valves, etc etc

Thanks in advance

Hi Andre,

K1 and K01 are one and the same.  At some stage Dellorto changed the markings to 2 digits and "1" became "01".

K14 are the stock fitment for a 1200, fitted in general to adapt to the crappy and very restrictive stock airbox.  Chuck out the innards, if you haven't yet done so, or do away with the filter arrangement altogether and start with a fresh set of K1 needles and AB265 needle jets.  Many rich running and consumption issues boil down to worn needles and/or needle jets, usually "and"!

The restrictive airbox was fitted to comply with ever stricter noise emmission regulations, but it is quite difficult to get a 1200 running decently with it, especially not as soon as the engine is tweaked a bit.  With your engine specs, the stock 1000 set up should work well, but do fit new bits before you start endless fiddling with needles and jets.

Thanks Piet. Makes sense.
Wish I'd bought those darn RS36 Mikunis from Oz in the first place. Mind you, all the new bits on these Delortos must make them worth a fortune...

I see you're from NZ, Andre.

If you have difficulty in obtaining anything Dellorto, I can supply almost everything on short notice, postage for small bits isn't that much from Europe.

Performing a complete overhaul on the Dellortos make Mikunis seem cheap, and there's no use taking shortcuts, they will rear their ugly head and bite back, probably sooner than later.  But it will restore near-new performance for quite some time.

Cheers,

Thanks Piet. Needle and jets were available off the shelf here (total cost NZ$42 = ~20 Euros. Cheap I thought)
Took your advice to do it properly
