Deves Oil Control Ring

Hello,

I'm finally getting around to rebuilding the top end of my Jota engine. I've had new liners and new valves seats. I've bought a set of Deves rings from Wolfgang but on installation I'm a llittle concerned about the four part oil ring, the fitment just doesn't feel right to me. Here are some pics to help explain my feelings.

Black = Piston
Green = Spacer
Red = Expander
Blue = Rails

Firstly the rings are very difficult to compress, secondly there is enough space for one of the rails to 'go under' the expander but not the the other, this doesn't seem right to me, Is my groove to big!  I've emailed Deves but not had a reply.

Thanks....

I find the idea of self assembly piston rings rather disturbing - especially when you think of how badly self assembly furniture can go  :o

Think I would use them as workshop decorations and buy a standard set.....the originals seem to last OK  ::)

I found a similar problem with Deves rings in particular the oil control rings be careful here even the replacements rings sent were worse I eventually got some custom made rings from a piston/ring manufacturer all I quoted was bore and piston ring groove dimensions.

If you've got  original std 75mm pistons (Mondial)  - I still have a few ring sets with what i prefer as the oil ring - I.E. - same as original - regards - Phil

I used Deves Rings and prefer there 3 peace Oil Ring with Expander over the Weak Single Casting - But your right you have a problem - Whether you have the wrong Oil Ring for the Landing or the Oil Land on the Piston is Worn Out - The Oil Rings should never jam into the expander onto the Piston Land Groove.

PS: I always buy a .010" to .030" larger Ring Kit and file the Gap to Minimal Specs.

Just a thought,looking at your photo i would say your useing one of the top two rings and not the oil rings iam sure they are much thiner than that :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Did you try installing all 3 components of the Oil Ring - You should NOT be able to depress the Scrapers past the Expander?

Personally, I always buy .010" to .030" over sized rings and Gap them to MFgr's Minimal Specs for each Cylinder Bore.

The scrapers have to go past the expander otherwise the expander can;t keep the 4th part of the oil ring out as Gazz refers to as the spacer, there are 4 parts not 3,most of the time iam wrong, could be again who knows,will post some photos, :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\ as they sit on the spindle is the way there installed,piston shows them in postion

Thanks for your help and advice. I've emailed them twice but haven't had any response.

The rail ring in the picture is definitely the correct ring, think the zoomed in picture is a bit deceptive. There are 4 parts to the oil ring. I think they should install with the rails going past the expander top and bottom as Rufustbear suggests, if not the expander would be crushed by the rails, however it appear we have a difference of opinion.

I've actually decided not to use them as I'm not risking my new liners, I now have a set where the oil ring is in two parts, the same as the ones I removed. It'll be interesting to get to the bottom of this though.

I'll measure the thickness of the rail..
