dm2 rev counter filter

I recently had a dmc ignition fitted to my RGS, unfortunately the bike was returned without the filter fitted to the electrical system which allows the electronic rev counter operate. The filter has been supplied and I do not have any instructions as to fitting it. If anyone can offer some guidence here, I'd be most grateful. The fitter is currently unavailable for help.

The filter has 3 wire, green, black, brown.

On the wiring loom under the tank, on the right hand side, there is a free green wire with a female bullet connector. I can't see any other wires which do not complete a circuit.

Also, where is the best place to locate the actual filter.

I'm no mechanic, so any help in baby language please.

ps I have used the search function, there is one thread refering to this issue, but I couldn't follow the instructions given.

Filter can be fitted anywhere, most convenient place (due to length of wires and where it has to connect to) is under the tank adjacent or on top of the 3 coils.

Whoever fitted your ignition wants a good telling off....most RGS tachos need the filter fitting to work correctly.  Question - is the tacho 'working' (albeit wildly swinging around?) If so, the tacho wire must be connected to one of the coils somehow ... you'll need to disconnect it and reconnect to the filter wire - see below.

The filter needs its black wire connecting to ground, so find a suitable stud which has a good connection to the frame - you'll find one near the coils, probably already with a couple of earth connections / lugs already in place.

The Green wire needs connecting to the tacho feed wire.  Sounds like your guy may have left it hanging (with the bullet connector)if it's not working at present - BUT NOTE that you're looking for a GREEN/GREY wire not just plain green!

Finally, the brown wire needs connecting to one of the 3 coil negative (-) connections - they're the ones with a black wire running to them, NOT orange which is the positive (+) side.

What thread did you find?  This - including the couple of links - covers it all -

Thanks for that answer Rob. I'll have another look on Monday and report back. The tacho is not working at present.

I agree about the fitter, more on this perhaps later.

Hi all, finally got enough time to look at this. Just want to make double sure of what I'm doing before I make a cock of it.

Black Filter Wire - no issue, connect to GND.

Green Filter Wire - I have a green/grey spare connector with a female connector on the loom. The wiring goes rearwards back into to loom. I was just a bit puzzled as to where the tacho gr/gy wire originally connected as there doesn't appear to be a spare male connector hanging unused. Was it originally hard wired into the coil circuit?

Brown Filter Wire - I have located the 3 black earth wires running to the coils. Do I need to cut one of these and splice the two cut ends and the resistor brown all together?

Sorry this is such basic stuff.

The brown simply connects to ONE of the blacks going to the coils.  Use whichever is handy.  These are not earthed, but are the ingoing impulses from the ignition.

Thanks Piet,
so just to clarify.
I cut any one of the the black earth wires and connect the brown filter wire to it.
Then I tape up and leave the other cut end  of the black wire doing nothing.

I think I'm probably over complicating this. The black earth wires terminate on the coils by a bolt which also secures the coil to the bike. I assume this is the earth point for the coil to the frame. Are people attaching the brown filter wire to one of these points and not cutting the wires at all?

As you have a DMC fitted, the impulses come through the white, grey and brown cables to the coils, black was the stock colour(sorry about that ::)).  Pick any one of he beformentioned and connect the brown from the filter to the same coil terminal, ie, splice the brown into the chosen cable.

The black from the filter already goes to ground, no point in a second ground connection.

Just in case anyone else has this simple problem in the future, I had to splice all three wires ( the cut ends of the coil earth plus the brown filter earth) together to get the rev counter to work.
