Don't Get Me Started!

Bit of family folklore....The old man was wounded and eventually captured in Crete in WW2. He'd been the SM in charge of transport so when retreat and evac was immenent, had supervised the draining of all fluids from all vehicles and running them till they seized....post capture he was transported to holding camp in one of his own trucks - bit noisier and smoky but still a runner.....a mate who visited Crete in the 1960's reported the trucks still running....

Must have been in the late 70ies that I changed oil in front of van Dijk's shop while chatting with other Laverdisti.

When I thought I was ready I fired the SF2 up and let in run a little. The engine was making an awkward sound. While wondering what that was, van Dijk Senior came walking out of the workshop shouting: 'Better to first put oil in the engine!!'

He clearly had heard that funny noise before.

No damage to the engine.

Important lesson learnt: Chatting and accurate working at the same time don't go together well..

have to admit I once did that on an SF3 back in late 80's.

Dad reckoned fill it up and lets see what happens.
Filled it up, put 25kms on it and drained oil - just as normal, so filled it up and 80,000kms later sold it on.  I believed the new owner replaced the tappets after another 40,000kms (so around 160,000kms total).

Put your heart back in your chest Paul.

Thanks all, great replies  :D

I have passed on your comments to my stupid frieind who is indeed relieved to hear that all should be OK. He told me he filled it with oil straight away (Penrite 25w70 - the bike likes that stuff) and went for a ride. All seemed OK and the bike was given a heavy dose of throttle in order to test it. He was a little concerned about cam bearings, but hey, nothing screeched.

I wouldn't mind his stupidity so much, but he has spent his whole life in Automotive Design and Development and has been intimate with a thousand engines with big red 'NO OIL' tags hanging from them. What a muppet. Does he never open his eyes?

I heard he went all the way to Breganze and back with a tampon inserted next to the cam chain tunnel to soak up oil leaking from the typical 'cam chain tunnel-corner crack' and running out over the front of the engine. Wierd fella wilth no mechanical sympathy...
