Dr John was a big part of the AMA Battle of the Twins in the 1980's. He was a Dentist with a penchant for motorcycle engineering, many of his modification/improvements were later adapted to factory produced bikes. Dr John's Guzzi took wins at Daytona and was twice the Champion in the AMA Endurance race Championship 1984 and 85

Very light and functional looking bike - note how short the tank is, how forward the saddle is .. compare with an SFC! Is there a footpeg/gear lever in that pic?

Left side shift. Linked brake system working off the handlebar lever through a proportioning valve usually 90/10 front/rear.
Cathcart liked it because it favoured straight line braking - which from personal observation was how he rode.

Early '80s had a lot going on in regard to chassis design and ergonomics. SFC is definitely very "old-school" compared to what was coming...
