Dull

Hi
Just hand a rearset casing welded and it had been shot blasted. So now it is quite bright!
How do I get back to a dull finish?

        Thanks Russ

Or use some acid etch such as used in alloy wheel cleaner, or find a source for the ingredient, phosphoric acid.
Make a 10% solution in water.

Stick it in my utrasonic cleaner and it will go any shade of black you want depending on time in the tank. 3 mins would be a dull grey.
alternatively boil it up the stove in a saucepan with a little baking powder.

At least a mat grey surface could be done to aluminium by taking a kettel from kitchen, filling it with water (cleaned water for batteries makes a better result than a tap water), hanging the piece of alumium with block of wood and steel wire under the water level and then cooking it but avoid boiling.

A littlebit similar looking surface comes to sand blasted aluminium than Laverdas original twin or triple engine castings have. It is interesting that a coarse sand blasted surface turns to smooth and slippy surface. Short time makes a light grey surface, longer makes it darker. All of the parts should have same colour should be done at same time. Darker spots could appear at least with tap water and if boiling too much.

One of my fellows teached this to me who makes surface finishing. This should create a "closed surface" that has oxygen on it and defends against corrosion. But I don't have experience yet how well parts last on vehicles.

I won't guarantee this one but have tried it a couple of times.

And that kettel should not be used anymore to cook something to eat. :)

Add a sprig of parsley as a garnish and serve with mashed potato and peas.

These ones i did for my jota  are bead blsted, give you some idea of the finish

About a week here should do it...

Same here at the moment, has hardly stopped raining for more than an hour the past week... :(  At least it isn't the weather that's keeping me off the bikes, so hardly have a reason to complain!
