Early 1000 Head/Barrel Gasket Face.

'76 3CL at least retained the smaller gasket face. No note of the introduction of the larger to be found in my literature. Must have been somewhere during production of the all-alloy heads, I've found these with both gasket face variants.

I've got an early 3CL about the 70th made I think and it has an early head and later barrels. I'm guessing the barrels were a later addition then. The head isn't all alloy. It's a bit of a conundrum this one, I think something must have happened to the middle cylinder at some time, the bores are nice, no real ridge at the top, the two outer pistons are well within spec but the middle one has .23mm clearance in the top ring land (hence the 1.6 thick MGA rings) and the exhaust valve seat has been recut and has no clearance. It has never been run since the work was done 20 years ago so I'm assuming this is what stopped progress.

By the way I went down to see Ged yesterday to get some advice and he had a disc braked Morini 3 1/2 Sport in there he was resurrecting, completely untouched from new. It must have done very few km because the chrome was still on the disc and the silencers were original. What a beauty, I reckon it was (to me) worth more than anything else in his workshop. Italian import of course, they were in a right old state after a couple of years in the UK.
I used to ride one of the exact same model around for my mate who who had a nasty accident and couldn't use it but wanted to keep it functioning. One of the best bikes ever for flat out fun.

there will be a date stamp on the top fin of the barrels Pat which will tell you what month and year the barrels were made
something like 480 which would be April 1980 for example

had a 1979 cylinder head quite a few years ago where the two outer skulls were cast iron but the middle skull was brass or something that looked like brass
was very well done by whoever did it, we just replaced the valve guides and seats and rebuilt it so shims were back in 2.9-3.0mm range, new valves etc and the bike is still running fine

I was just looking at the green book picture of the 3CL Motorrad dismantled for their write up. That one has the smaller gasket faces.
