Early 3c tyre options

Bike I just got hold of has a square, rock-hard and very ancient Metzler on the rear and an oversized (almost balloon like) Cheng Shin on the front. Not the optimal set up.  :D

What tyres are wire wheel 3C owners liking for their bikes these days?

My brother uses TT100s on his 3C. He reckons they're OK. They certainly have the classic look. My 3CL is on BT45s and I was a little beyond my comfort zone last time I tried keeping up with him on a twisty road.  :D

TT100's certainly look like something you may see fitted back in the day. Any one with experience with Avon AM26 Road riders?

Yep http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php/topic,82749.msg171820.html#msg171820

I should add though that the 3rd tyre held together just fine and did feel great, probably just a batch problem at the time.

Bridgestone Bt 023 Radial front and a Pirelli Sports Demon 140 on a 3.oo rear rim.But I tend to be far from typical with rubber.BTW that works great, wet and dry for me.

I have also experienced Avon Roadriders splitting at the bottom of the centre tread rain grove on my Jota.
The tyre has been replaced by Avon on the basis that it was part worn, so they met the cost of what life
was left in the tyre after a somewhat protracted transaction. Have yet to try the new tyre, but for what
its worth I have doubts as to whether the Roadrider is up to the job in the first place, look at the GS1000
Suzuki websites for instance & see people experiencing the same sort of issues. HTH.

Back in Nov. 2010 I fitted Avon AM26 tires (tyres) 100/90 front and 110/90 rear..V rated. I like the tires. Removed the BT45s with the 100/90 front and 110/90 rear sizing. The AM26 tires were actually larger than the same sized BT45s. I liked the way they filled the front and rear fenders and general appearance. The BT45s always looked and were, in my opinion, too small. The front BT45 wore out weirdly too, cupped and feathered. The rear BT45 was good for about 5300 miles. The front BT45 was worn at 10,000.

I think the machine handles fine, wet or dry, with the AM26s and I appreciate the additional ground clearance. My center stand is easier to use too.

The picture below of the rear AM26 with about 5000 miles on it. I might get 6000-7000 miles on the tire. Pretty good as I have run 4.25x18 TT100s and BT45s and the best I could get out of a rear tire was about 5000 miles.

The front AM26 still looks new at 5000 miles. This picture was taken shortly after the tires were fitted.

Here is a picture of the Laverda with the BT45s front and rear from a road trip in 2008. Notice the height of the bike on the center stand with the BT45s.

Some like the BT45s, some don't due to wear.

Opinions are "split"  :D on the Avons.

Any other considerations?

BT45s on my Jota are pretty well worn out at 5000km. Wear front and rear is reasonably even (rear is a little more worn than the front, but not by much). No cupping or feathering of the front tyre though. Maybe I happened to run it on the right pressure to prevent cupping (32-34psi). If that's the case, it certainly wasn't through any in-depth tyre knowledge - a complete fluke. Might also be my riding style. I tend not push the limits of cornering grip on the road or brake heavily on the front while cranked over. You never know what's around the corner on public roads so I like to leave a safety margin.

I run 33psi front, 37psi rear in my BT45s, get pretty decent wear rates.

Running Pirelli Sport Demons on the Le Mans, fantastic wet or dry. Dunno how they would go on the Lav, I fitted TT100's on that but it hasn't been ridden yet.
