early style ignition feed from alternator question

Have tried to find info in older threads. Anyone know if the feed from alternator (formerly the old HKZ ignition) could be used to charge battery through (Shindengen mosfet FH012AA) regulator? I think someone said that wire produces 30 volts. The wire would be redundant otherwise, since the Ignitech is fed off the switched fuse.

The voltage generated to power the HKZ (CDI) ignition should be much higher than what normally feeds the rectifier/regulator. I would guess it to be too high. A more detailed description of your setup would help.

I seem to recall that the HKZ ignition primary coil puts out a fairly high voltage. 400V is rattling around somewhere in the random jumble of trivia in my brain. Probably a bit high for the RR. Usually when people toss the HKZ ignition out, they also chuck the two piggy-back coils out of the alternator stator and fit another charging coil.
 
Charging coils are made to produce amps, I think that the ignition coils are for making huge voltage with very little amps. Also charging coils are generally numerous around the circumference, ignition coils with two might be a challenge. You can always try it if you have a few rec/regs lying about to risk destroying, but mosfet units are too bloody expensive, especially when you can get a system off the shelf from Red etc. to have great charging.
Otherwise if you mean using the pathetic charging coils that used to go straight to the battery without a regulator, I would say of course you could but they don't seem to produce enough to keep the battery charged anyway.
 
The HKZ systems use 3 different coils for current supply.

The large coil and the small coil opposite, riding piggy-back on the 3rd, are for supply to the charging system/battery. 

The 3rd coil is the HT supply for the ignition.  Under no circumstances should this coil be used to power anything other than the HKZ/CDI system.  The HKZ is in effect a magneto driven system and does not require a battery to work.

The later BTZ systems fed the ignition off the battery, hence their dependance on this.  These had two of the large coils fitted to the alternator back plate.

I suppose a transformer might work, but you'd be adding a heap of weight to the bike for a piss-poor gain in charging capacity. And where are you going to find a transformer of the right specs for your strange application anyway? Way better solution is to replace the ignition coil with a charging coil, just like everyone else in the same situation has done. No need to invent a less effective fix.
