One more try!
I'm putting an alternator, stock 500, back on my race bike.
I'll be needing a regulator/rectifier.
The name Electrex springs to mind but having looked at thier extensive site, which one should I go for?

Thanks
Paul

Gotta dash out right now, but I have an Electrex RR on one of my bikes. Will check this evening. Would have thought the one listed for the 650 Laverda on their site would be about right though.

One question Paul - are you putting a battery on as well?

H.

Salute Volki,

Thanks, I'll have a look but still need to know what kind of specifications I would need for a machine running just a starter motor and the ignition and maybe charging a very expensive lithium battery.

Thanks Melle. The Atlas and various 650 Laverda variations have lights. Am I going to need the same performance from a machine drawing a lot less on it's battery apart from starter motor?

Paul,

for racing you can get away with a total loss system. No alternator just a battery. Modern AGM types like a PC680 have no problem starting the bike. Only power needed after starting is for the ignition system. Many racers use this system. AGM battery?s are heavier than LiOn types but not having a alternator compensates for this I guess. Having a fresh battery on the charger in the pit will see you racing a hole day! If you want to use the alternator you of course will need the rectifier/regulator. All you need is steady output of 15 Volts max. I dont know what alternator a 500 has, dou you have a wiring diagram?

Hi Melle,

Yes. The battery on the machine is located in the back of the saddle and it's alocated space is extremely limited.
There is no room on the bike for a battery other than there. It is a small and light machine, probably around 100 kg.

One option would be to have the fiberglass saddle modified and painted to accept a larger battery which would be just fine. As it is, the battery on the machine is good for one start and 15 minutes ignition. Then, basta!
Now if you have somebody just up the road from you who can modify and repaint my saddle, I'm nearly on my way and we'll have a beer or two.

Otherwise, yes, I have a wiring diagram, and no, I wouldn't need one to wire in an alternator and regulator/rectifier.

I'm actually using the RR60 (Laverda Jota) type, but I guess they're much of a muchness.

Hi Paul

several of the Electrex regulator/rectifiers would work. I would suggest you contact them directly concerning your specific race needs, I was told a while ago Electrex have developed a regulator/rectifier intended for race use that will shut itself off somehow when not needed, supposedly freeing up a few horsepower.

I just searched, found a reference in the last paragraph of this product description

Thanks Paul.
Yes, need to phone them.
Then again, if anybody local can modify my saddle to take a much larger battery....I'm game.

Wolfgang mailed me tonight to say he'd shipped an alternator!
