Getting ready to rebuild engine. Put seals in place. Tried fitting top on and a little space by clutch housing. Ok there is a screw there w/ head about the size of a dime holding bearing. Rounded side of head is inside a curve on case. Very thin groove on screw. Is there anything I need to know about loosening this screw? Then what sealing glue for cases? And then turn over on side to torque cases...I have never done this before...

Yamaha or Laverda 100/ 200 cc or any other.
If you would inform about some more details maybe the insiders can help you. On the other side if you have never done this before, mastakes are possible and can damage the engine - what ever it is- totally.

".I have never done this before..." I suggest you get help from someone experienced not just with putting crankcases together but Laverda motors in particular. You are no doubt referring to the screw that holds the outer of the gearbox layshaft bearing in place so I will guess that you are working on a Laverda 750 or 1000. The cases should go back together with this screw in place. There are numerous pitfalls to fall into when assembling these motors, not least the pin that locates the selector fork shaft, etc etc. Laverdaparadies has all the engine schematics for reference. I use ThreeBond product for sealing cases but everyone has their favourite. Again, I stress if you are flying blind get someone experienced or you might pay dearly later.
 
I second and third that emotion. You could well be investing your time in ruining your motor. Get some help from someone who knows - there's too much that can go wrong.
 
This is the sf2 engine 17580...forgot to mention. Ok I know I need a wide screwdriver but one that fits the thin groove. Tried auto stores looking for screwdriver on a socket head, Nothing...Ok I did try the fit dry. Does not seat flush where the screw is...Ok I'll make a few calls and see if anybody can help!!! However there are not any Laverda people I know of in Texas.
 
You can use a bench grinder and form the preferred slot driver to fit that screw from another screw driver or bit.

I constantly modified my tools for the job.

That screw should not be touched if the gearbox is to be re-installed!  It is not always fully seated as it is part of the gearbox shaft spacing system.

Do yourself a favour and get somebody that knows his way around these engines, I already see grief, and loads more questions on the not-too-far horizon... ::)

If you think that screw has been moved from where the factory LOCKED it (by peening over the metal around from memory) the gearbox will need to be assembled completely, with all selectors and selector forks to ensure that it operates as it should. Even determining that is not straightforward - a .25mm discrepancy in the spacers used between gears can affect the operation.

My concern is that if the screw is in the wrong place, there's every chance the rest of the gearbox has been stuffed around with. If that's the case, you really do need an experienced Laverda head to nut it out. Once done right it will work seamlessly for decades to come. get it wrong and you can stuff it up royally. My SF1 motor has done in excess of 150,000 miles and that screw has never been moved or needed to be moved.
 
Scott Potter may still work on Laverdas...he was in Santa Fe. If you search this Fourum you should get some info. Other than that other than Wolfgang up here in Canada not sure who in the US  could do this work.
 
Ok Thanks. The screw is untouched. After checking out the other side closely it looks like it should not be moved...Now if I can just dry fit it once I can go ahead & glue & seal the case. Will try a few things...
Anyway the wiring on 8787 is going to be next. More worried about that...But it will be a while...
